I've been on a trip since Monday. Took my laptop computer and the first time I tried to turn it on, the fan died. It won't boot up because of the fan monitor. I expect that it is easy to replace the fan once you get to it but there are a whole lot of screws on the bottom and it isn't obvious which hold the case together and which hold components in place. If it isn't easy to figure out, I'll just take it somewhere and get a tech to fix it. Meanwhile, I carried a dead computer half way across the country and back. Anyone familiar enough with this computer to provide some instructions?

Thanks for the input. I'll tackle it this afternoon after it gets too hot to work outside.

Well, I got it apart, got the fan part number, and got it back together with no left over parts or screws. Found out that "ESC" overrides the "Fan Error" so that I can boot up at least for a short while. The fan runs but is noisy. I think I'll just get a new laptop instead of spending the money on a fan for a several year old laptop. Hopefully, I can run this one long enough to transfer my stuff to a new one.

I love the quality and the display of my 1-year-old T400, but I hate the nipple and he keyboard layout. Can't wait for it to die... But I'm probably in for many years of suffering, as the little sucker is quite tough.

I wonder if you could safely cold soak it in the refrigerator for a few hours before attempting to do a backup. Need to check the temp. operating range before trying that one.

A laptop has not enough thermal capacity to run more than a minute without the fan. I would rather create an external duct than bother with cold-soaking.

When I had it apart, I got a drop of oil or two near the fan bearing. The fan is now running enough not to get the fan error message.
