Just out of curiousity....

My dad's CFI expired in 1984 <g> (is still current, flies a Citation for a living) and he doesn't intend to renew it at this point (but it's a possibility). He does plan on getting a check-out in a C172 in a few months so I can at least get up with him and fly some menuevers and landings and save some cost at the same time.

Out of curiousity, can I fly left seat while he flies right seat as PIC? I'm unsure if there are any FARs that state the PIC must fly from the left seat and/or need a current CFI ticket to do so.

Thanks for any help! ;)

Nope. Doesn't matter which seat he is in.

He can be PIC in the right seat

PIC can fly right seat but, if something untoward happened the insurance company might want to know why the PIC chose not to use the more parallax friendly angle afforded for instrument viewing by the typical left seat.

Hi Jason,

Be sure you check the insurance policy very carefully, as many policies state that the PIC must occupy the left seat, though there can be conditionals as well. For instance, our club policy states that the club member must be PIC and be in the left seat unless they are receiving instruction towards a CFI rating.

Jason -- I goofed up and edited instead of quoting your post -- apologies. - Ron

To answer the question you posted, you would do best to check both the FBO's rules and insurance and your own renter's insurance policies about the non-CFI PIC being in the right seat.

The insurance company "might want to know" all sorts of things, but unless the policy prohibits this for a non-CFI (some do so read carefully) it doesn't matter.
