Landing mishap at OSH on Saturday

I was at Airventure on Saturday and and saw a couple of emergency vehicles going down towards rwy 36. Pulled out my scanner and it stopped on 121.5 with the unmistakable warble of an ELT. Uh oh. Walked down and snapped this picture. Plane caught a crosswind gust and pilot lost control according to some witnesses. Pilot was apparently unharmed. Plane has both wing tips damaged and collapsed gear. Probably damaged engine too.

Glad the pilot walked away. What was the other one that happened? I heard it was something fast like a Lancair and he over-corrected a bounce and it stalled/rolled over on its back?
 
So, how many crashes/incidents Oshkosh this year have? Seems like there were quite a few. Is this normal every year, the number of them?

Every year we lose a couple going up, a couple at the show, and a couple going home. It just goes with the turf. I've seen this over MANY years. if anything, it was safer this year, with no one killed anywhere in or around the field, although a couple were lost away from Oshkosh, such as the couple that died after takeoff from Stevens Point. The injuries from someone not paying attention while driving through Scholler the other evening seemed to be the worst case of the show.

With that said, Sunday's Arrivals were the most chaotic I have seen in YEARS. Lots of close calls, and LOTS unneeded radio chatter that caused problems for everyone.

One of the guys said they did 2,500+ operations on Sunday, and I believe it. The place filled up in just a few hours after the weather broke. Between 1130am and noon, between 400 to 500 targets took off from Wi, In, Mi, and Il heading toward Oshkosh. Watching it happen in real-time on Foreflight and FlightRadar24 while sitting at the Red Barn with some Ultralight crazies was nuts.
 
I lost count. 1 Saturday, 2 on Sunday, 1 mid week? Pure guess

Also at least 2 ultralight crashes. One was a paraglider that over corrected on landing and damaged a parked helicopter. The other, I believe, was an overrun into the fence.

Yes I came in somewhere between 11:30 AM and noon. It was crazy busy and on top of that runway 27 was closed. Like most I was watching the weather all morning as I made my way towards Oshkosh waiting for the ceilings to rise. The airport was reporting 1100 ft ceilings when I made my way to Ripon. It was busy but I found a spot. Turned off my transponder like a good boy and noticed as usual on my TCAS that a whole lot of people don't. Then I had somebody descend right on top of me between Ripon and Fisk right through the overcast! Luckily he had his transponder on so I had some warning. I slowed up best I could but the Fisk controller sent me back to Ripon.

As I was going back to Ripon to rejoin the controller chewed out basically everyone over the railway tracks for not having enough separation and sent back six to Ripon. "If you don't work with me guys we will start you holding". I think that was a bad way for him to handle he should have maybe sent back three because now besides all the others trying to join at Ripon there was me and now another six planes trying to get in. It took me five attempts to get into the line and there was a lot of chatter with people complaining about planes cutting in. I finally got in line and got behind someone in a high wing doing maybe 70 knots which totally sucked for me but I didn't want to have to go back so I followed him nose high. Someone else in the line complained "I need 90 knots!". The 2300 ft /135 knots arrival was not available because of the ceilings so everyone was stuck doing the 90 knot arrival. I was called out, rocked my wings and got turned to 090 for runway 18. What freaked me out then was the Fisk controller just suddenly said "Oh my God!" with pause before continuing. I don't know what he saw. Probably a near miss.

The rest of the approach was uneventful. Taxiing over to the North 40 I saw a gray Mooney on its belly on Runway 27 looking very sad.
 
I saw that Mooney land. He was doing fine then the right main landing gear collapsed.

Every year it amazes me that a large group of people either can't read simple instructions in the NOTAM, or simply don't care to follow them.
 
A friend watched a cylinder in his Jabiru go cold en route to OSH, then had a complete loss of power. Put it in a field but collapsed nose wheel in the process. He's fine.

Wednesday evening between the afternoon and evening airshows was pretty rough as well. As we approached Ripon they had just started releasing a bunch of folks from the holding areas. As everyone was cramming in there, I heard the controller yell "Oh sh*t!" and then silence for a few seconds. When he came back on, he started chewing everyone out and sending a few back to Ripon. Not sure what he was cussing at exactly, but apparently there was somebody coming over Fisk side by side at one point. We had people repeating the controllers instructions instead of keeping their mouths shut. We had two or three different people asking the controller what parking areas were open and closed. We also had someone with a stuck mic on the frequency that made it almost impossible to hear the controller. I took myself out of line and made a lap around the lake just to get some spacing, because I was a little freaked out in that mess of folks, some of which were apparently retarded. It drives me absolutely nuts when people obviously haven't read the Notam or choose to ignore it.

It IS amazing. And that continues for leaving Oshkosh too I have noticed.

I left OSH VFR and filed my IFR plan as specified in the NOTAM for my direction of flight from Dells VOR. The NOTAM also says to pick up the clearance over the VOR from Madison Approach and not Chicago Center (who are very busy in that area). I did that and got my clearance and the Madison Approach controller made a point of thanking me for following the NOTAM so obviously a bunch of people were not. I have to say ATC in the area is surprisingly patient and friendly considering all the people not following the rules.
 
Few saw it, and it's not been publicized, but during the Saturday night airshow Gene Soucey had an emergency when his pyrotechnics malfunctioned. They would not go out, as designed.

Our first clue was when he was circling us out in the North 40, dropping occasional embers that made it all the way to the ground. Realizing that this was pretty bad, one of our gang turned up the radio in time to hear Soucey telling the Air Boss that he needed fire trucks when he landed on Rwy 9, right in front of us.

BTW: He was incredibly calm, for a guy flying a partly fabric covered plane that was potentially on fire. Laconic, even, telling a worried Air Boss that it was "no big deal".

Then, things got messed up. He circled one more time, and landed right in front of us, cutting off at the taxiway in front of the Weeks Hangar. Some how, some way, the fire trucks got bad info and just sat down at the intersection at the far East end of the runway, with Gene slowly ramping up his aggravation on the radio as he sat in or near his smoking plane. It was a good 3 minutes before they were spraying water, even though he called them from the air to give them the head's up.

I never heard any more about it. We couldn't see the extent of the damage (it was dark), and they towed it into the Weeks hangar. Anyone hear more?
 
I was on Avsig the year that they lost two members at OSH.
