I want to attend sun n fun but I want to find an alternative airport due to the traffic at Lakeland.
We will arrive on Thursday before the fly in. We plan on staying in or near Orlando to do the regular tourist stuff.
An uncontrolled airport with access to a rental car would be great.
Any ideas?

Try GIF Winter Haven and stay at one of the motels right by the airport. Their not fancy but the holiday in is nice and both Avis and Enterprise will take care of you.

Bartow is also close and has a nice FBO. I use both when I visit family in that area.

Best,

Dave

If you're afraid of a midair due to increased traffic, you might want to land in Georgia. All of Florida north of Lakeland will be a madhouse... At least, if it's anything like OSH. Keep your head on a swivel, and have fun!

I am looking at Zephyrhills. We are flying in on Wed (2 days from now) and going to Orland for the tourist stuff.
We plan to return to Lakeland on Sunday to go to the fly in Monday and Tuesday.
Anyone familiar with the Zephyrhills airport? I found a car rental site in town but they are closed on Sunday so I will have to check tomorrow on a car.

I was based at Zephyrhills (ZPH) for several years and I learned to fly at Plant City (PCM).
My suggestion it without a doubt ZPH. You can have a rental car waiting for you at the airport, Enterprise, I think. Call the FBO, they can help you arrange it.. Each time I've returned to Florida for S-N-F I base there. Just drive down State road 39 to I-4, and then east to Lakeland. Usually ZPH has the best fuel prices around as well. Keep an eye out for skydiving activities as well. Have fun. You can also buy your tickets to the fly in at the FBO there as well, or that's where I always bought them. While you are there, look up another board member who runs an engine shop on the field. Charlie Melot, Zephyr Engines. An impressive operation to say the least.

Hmmm.... That makes me realize that I'm going to have a lot of opposite direction traffic, since we're heading back from Key West on the Sunday (or Monday) before S-n-F. I think IFR at 12,000 might be called for.
