"Six people were on board the Special Enforcement Bureau"
That's interesting. I wonder if they found some special cargo on the crash to which they were responding prior to having their own? (All will survive, thankfully.)
The helo was a Super Puma, which LASD uses for special operations and air rescue. They fly with two pilots (deputies), two or more flight crew deputies and often a doctor serving on a volunteer basis.
The flight crew deputies are part of the Emergency Services Detail - SWAT, SAR, rescue technicians, certified paramedics, and rescue divers rolled into one. Very small unit - about a dozen deputies out of 10,000 sworn on their department. Apparently takes around 15 years to get into, difficult selection process and a long training period. Very sharp, extremely fit, skilled men on that detail.
They do a lot of search-and-rescue, especially in the mountains. Lost/injured hikers, bicyclists, and rock climbers, motorcycle crashes gone over the edge, and other such. For those unfamiliar, LA County has mountains to 10,000 feet, extremely remote canyons with little to no road access.
Given that, it’s most likely that there wasn’t any known “special cargo” they were responding to, but a medical/rescue incident.
