Just in on CNN a 777 from Korea is off the runway and on fire in SFO.

This tweet and photo by an apparent passenger was linked in another forum:

Hopefully he's correct and no serious injuries.

Dumbest thing I've seen: Fox News (who I generally like) has an "expert" on the phone analyzing this accident...except he can't see any of the images of the accident. So the clueless news anchors are describing the damage they're seeing and he's opining on what may have happened!! Insane.

If you fly to Asia do it on a US carrier...I better stop there.

There's debris starting at the waters edge before the threshold, continuing to the tail feathers laying just before the numbers. Looks like he really dragged it in.

live video of crash scene from a helicopter here:

http://www.kitv.com

The plane is resting on the dirt near a runway. It is scorched, has no tail, and the engines are broken off. Emergency slides are extended.

Yeah it looks like the tail got sheared off at the embankment. I hope this isn't another BA777 fuel freezing event.

Exactly. Debris trail and ground damage starts at the seawall. Empennage is at threshhold. Looks like he might have knocked the tail off on the seawall.

777 down SFO

News says major fire, but passengers were seen exiting the plane. Not many details ATM but hope all are safe.

Debris in the water just before point tail struck the seawall. Sure looks like he knocked the tail off on seawall.

The track shown on flightaware shows what looks like a reasonable approach for 28L or 28R.

The last two datapoints for the plane's altitude and speed shown on flightaware are 600 ft 141 kts and then 100 ft 109 kts.

They've determined it was runway "Twenty Eight El" :). Gotta love the news media.

The approach end of 28L sticks out into the bay. Helicopter video looks like the plane came in at the correct heading but too low, hitting the stony seawhile and then sliding along the runway before getting to the threshold.

FAA website that KFSO closed 15 minutes ago.

Nope not true. It was reported by CNN. USCG said they have a helo in the area and that is all they can confirm.

Got to be one of the shortest SAR deployments in history. CGAS SFO is at the approach end of 10L right on the water. CNN hasn't revisited the report of a body.

Actually I heard CNN read the statement from the sector PA person who said that they could not confirm the body. So I think CNN is dropping the claim for now.

I saw on an ATC's blog that all 303 souls have been accounted for and confirmed alive. Good news, but not official, I don't think.

I am told that 28 L PAPI and ILS were OOS due to airport construction.

If the pilot was attempting to land on 27L that may be the problem.

Re: 777 down SFO

It looks like the plane hit the begining of the runway, shearing the gear off.

This is likely a case of pilot error.

I guess we'll know for sure pretty soon.
