File a NASA report if it bothers you, but I think you were fine. **** happens, life goes on, learn and move forward. No flight is perfect, every flight is a lesson. Never lose that spirit and you will always be a student of aviation. No one is perfect..... NO ONE!

The main point is you were flying and enjoying the freedom of flight as an aviator, don't let the rest of the non-knowitalls following this post take away from that fact.

Enjoy the freedom of flying and not the fear of retribution. Always easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. :D

Technically, yes, you did violate 14 CFR 91.130(c)(1), which requires you to establish and maintain communication with ATC while in Class C.

Odds are, no one cared enough if there was no traffic in the area, but they might.

File the NASA form. That's the forgiveness Geico is talking about. If you never hear another word about it, that's fine. If you do, point to the form and own up to the mistake. As long as that's what it was.

Note that NASA forms are confidential, but the titles are not. Don't put "busted Class C" in the title. It might not have been the greatest idea to post this while logged in, but I doubt anyone is going looking unless someone truly in contact with ATC (perhaps, on an instrument approach) had to dodge you.

Seriously, call the tower next week (NOT tonight) and ask them how they want you to handle it next time. Most controllers are really just trying to keep you from swapping paint with another plane. They will give you the real scoop and make you a better aviator. That SHOULD be the goal, not adhereing to stupid FARS.

Thanks, obviously i am posting this as a question because i am a new aviator and basically i just called approach control late and while i was in the airspace.

Should i call the tower and tell them? What happens if I tell them now just over the phone? Also if i violated something wouldnt ATC have given me the number to call?
 
Thanks, obviously i am posting this as a question because i am a new aviator and definetly do not know it all, i thought it was important to stay on the CTAF which i was cleared to go to and tell the other aircraft inbound to the airport my intentions and that i was departing the area before i went back to approach. I dont really feel like i busted anything and that it was a big deal because i was in E airspace for most of it, however i would have been in C for that short time.

Ryan, the simple fact that you even care tells me you are going to be an excellent aviator. :yes:

Ok, i just feel like maybe I should let them know, however i really dont think it was anything. Could that other guy report it after he landed and get in trouble?
 
I have definetly learned from this mistake, every flight i learn something new, thats for sure.
 
If Chattanooga cared, they would have told you to call them after landing. :wink2: Not even worth transmitting over CTAF for the guy at Collegedale.

Nope. I fly in and out of the hospital at CHA on a daily basis. I've called the tower guys on the phone on more than one occasion to chit chat. They've got a good bunch of controllers there. They're not out to get you. If they had a loss of separation with an IFR passing over you, they would have let you know.

Oh very cool, I assume your LifeForce or an AE guy? I always call when i enter and exit the airspace, I just accidentally called them a little late this time being that i was making sure the guy inbound to the satellite knew my intentions, i just shouldn't have climbed while doing so.

Listen to all the advice and encouragement already given. My only add-on would be to pencil out a flight plan for your excursions, even if you aren't going from point A to point B. Have a rough idea what you are doing and where you are going. Write down nearby airports, runways (including patterns/TPA) and frequencies in the vicinity of the flight.

Yeah, recently the weather has been keeping us grounded over in the mountains. Basically sitting around watching TV all day.:sad:
 
FWIW, make a trop to your local controlling facility, may it be a tower or tracon. Talk to the guys, they will love talking to you too. You will learn a lot.
Every time I go up to our local tower, I have plenty of questions. Sometimes one or two that they can't answer off the bat. :)

Actually have done this more than once, got a couple tours of it, very good experience.

You are under no obligation to report yourself.

If you did, you'd probably get a "well, don't do it again," but I'm not tempted to test that.

Yes, given a chance, ATC probably would have given you a number to call if they cared.
