Does anybody know if the RS232 output from a Garmin G5 can be used as the altitude on a KLN94? If so, are there any tricks or gotchas to be aware of?

It depends. As long as the KLN94 has a serial input for altitude, it can be done. However, it depends also on what you are connecting to the G5. If you have a navigator, it needs to send MapMX information to the G5, which is a different baud rate than Altitude, in which case it wouldn't work. If it is a non-waas navigator, like the GNS430 non-waas, then it will be sending Aviation data to the G5, which is the same baud rate as altitude, and then it will work. If the G5 is stand-alone, or connected to a non-waas navigator, then you will need an external WAAS antenna connected directly to the G5, and you can output altitude data via RS232.

It does have a serial input for altitude but the installation manual states that “altitude may be derived from some RS232 air data systems” I am not sure what exactly some means or if the G5 is considered a air data systems.

Regarding things hooked up to the g5. I have a SL30 sending aviation data to the G5 but that is all.
