Kick the Kneeboard - Something Missing?

My Garmin audio panel has a playback, I've only used it once or twice just to double check something. However it's a pretty cool function.

The Lighspeed Zulu2 and later has an iOS app which will do that too. Downside, is it uses Bluetooth which you might be using for other purposes, depending on your avionics.

No doubt a cool function but I was replying to the guy who said it’s mandatory. Good lord... short term memory blown much?

Plus there’s always, “say again” if you’re incredibly behind the power curve, brain wise. :)

It’d be one of those “Yeah know how to use it and use it if you got it” for only the latter circumstance for me. It’s not going to help much without a “standby” for clearance delivery and the vast majority of the rest, I’d better be able to hold in my head long enough to punch it and read it back... sheesh.

Real world a pen a paper is kinda needed.

But I don’t strap junk onto my leg, heck I don’t even have a thigh holster lol

Little pad and paper on the cover for your iPad that is ether on your lap or stowed is the winner IMHO

Quick numbers just go on the appropriate device with a readback. Clearances go on paper on a clipboard, where I also keep track of fuel and tank changes. Attach two strips of felt to the back of the clipboard and it won't slide. Checklists also clip to the board for easy access. Mechanical pencil clips to the board. Approach plates are in the tablet EFB. I could just write on the EFB tablet with the E-pen, but clipboard batteries don't die and the software doesn't barf.

Spiral steno book is great by the way. Right size, not a mess, works. Out of the way and stowed if you feel like scribbling on the electronic gadget today. Available as needed. Fits in most things that’ll hold said gadget.

I finally got to the last one of the set I bought about 10 years ago. :D

they are actually too big for my new kneeboard.

I didn't see anything in his post making paper and a voice recorder mandatory. I must have missed it in my dotage.

Well ... I’m wondering what I “got away with” without a voice recorder VFR for over 20 years, I guess...

For a short VFR flight you may be able to get away with it but for IFR it is not sufficient. Paper and a Voice recorder and preflight preparation is best.

Whatever I was doing was “not sufficient.” Apparently I died on one of those flights and nobody told me, or something. :)

Edit: I see it switches back to IFR, but still. A tad much.

the flight com portable intercom we used when i was trying for my tailwheel signoff had a record function.
The only practical use we ever found for it was saving my instructor's voice.
He recorded in a very mono-toned voice "more right rudder"
.....and replayed it over and over and over.....

The Garmin audio panel in the plane I'm currently renting has that too. GMA 347. Haven't used it....but Reading the manual it says it replays the last 2-1/2 minutes. Seems like far too much.... might be good for something like a clearance, maybe.... but to catch a missed altimeter setting or the last thing somebody said... no doesn't seem useful.

For the G1000 audio panel in my DA40... "The PLAY Key controls the play function. Pressing the PLAY Key once plays the latest recorded memory block. The PLAY Annunciator flashes to indicate when play is in progress. The PLAY Annunciator turns off after the present memory block has finished playing."... or press the key twice for the next-to-last, etc. I believe the total audio memory is 2.5 minutes. I use the Play function occasionally.

I am saving all my old WAC charts as an ultimate back up and will still write down on a knee board if IFR or close. As someone in electronics biz for years (PCL receivers) I trust lots of redundancy over fashion. Those Dead Sea Scrolls are still around.

It does not start playing back at 2:30. Each time you pop the button it goes back a little further. Up to 2:30.

ahhh... great to know!
I've just so far not had a chance or need to try it.....

I have Avare on my phone and tablet, and always have the phone, and sometimes I carry both.
But..
I also carry a small pocket size spiral notepad, black pen, and red pen in my shirt pocket.
In the notebook I have the details for every airport within 1 hour flying time for the Cub. (Yeah, yeah, a 75 mile radius from GBR. Don't judge.)
I can always look at the notebook, instead of struggling with a paper map or bother with tablet or phone. It's actually quicker.
It's necessary since I do (mostly) paper navigation.
