The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
And we can sure use the space. We have a very active pilot mill here (US Aviation) and occasionally their departures and arrivals seem to happen at the same time... causing a bit of a jam up at the runup area and hold short line. Pushing them to the newer runway will open up the existing one for those of us who are arriving full stop, or wanting to depart and not remain in the pattern.

Original plans were to have 5000 ft to the west of the existing runway. But the city is talking about about something a tad longer to accommodate jet traffic.

City leaders agreed Tuesday to accelerate plans for a second runway at Denton Enterprise Airport, with construction beginning in the fall and the landing strip opening as early as summer 2018.

The Texas Department of Transportation would pay for about $5.9 million of the $8.5 million project. The city would pay the remaining $2.6 million.

The city's transportation director, Mark Nelson, told the City Council during a work session Tuesday afternoon flights bound for DFW International Airport or Dallas Love Field can use Denton for relief when necessary. That designation helped make Denton's airport eligible for the state funding.

The Denton airport is the seventh busiest airport in Texas.

Always nice when people are in agreement ,for an added runway, especially one that can handle jet traffic.

Renaming it Enterprise was the first step, right? Cough, hack, wheeze.

And becoming a reliever for DFW and DAL? Sure, pass that joint to me my friend.

Alliance? Already there. Meacham? Oh, already there but lost our cross wind runway.

Don't get me wrong... building another deck on the Enterprise is all very cool, but the justifications are BS.

I think enterprise was a PR spin In Denton's continuing effort to attract businesses like WinCo Foods and Aldi and Target. Personally, I would have preferred Executive like Dallas did with Redbird.

Put a Beth Marie's on the field and I'll fly down every weekend and put the new runway to use. :D And get Littrell to put together a real team so I can come down and watch something worthwhile.

Well, Business Air does have a soft serve ice cream machine... so it's a start.

Soft serve ain't getting me in a plane for 6 hours one way.

Guess they finally got rid of all the airport/airplane haters in the city government for this to be able to happen. Could have been done years ago and brought in lots of revenue for Denton and area, but too many haters in places that they could wreck any expansion plans. I know of several multi-million dollar businesses that they chased away with hate, discontent and absolute stupidity.

It's been in the plans for at least 5 years. TxDOT had already approved their part of the funding... but it took a bit for the City to get their end of the money worked out.

I am glad to see it happen.... too often the student gaggle jams up the hold short line by having groups arriving and departing within the same time frames... causing a long wait to get to the line, then additional wait while they open up a spot in the landing traffic for me to depart.

Mike: I don't know how far back you go with DTO, but long before the tower was there, we used to have a huge problem with the student pilots from Meacham. The would be turning base somewhere between 380 and 1173, with full flaps and dragging those poor 150's and 152's in for landings. If we were in the Mustang or an SF-260, and even our Chipmunk, we'd just keep a close pattern and land and almost always be back on our ramp before they crossed the airport fence line. Aero Valley at times was just as bad. I've been onboard aircraft #35 for takeoff with 15 more in the pattern at the same time. Lots of fun times in those days. Burgers at Vickie's....

Moved to Denton when I was 5 and Dad was an FO for Braniff. But got more serious about GA and my PPL in 2009.

And the best burger joint was Denton Independent Hamburger on the Courthouse Square

Congrats!!
Do you know what busy airports are Number 1 - 6 in Texas?

Okay, I'm cornfussed. Why can Denton only be a reliever on Tuesday afternoons?

I loved flying out of ADS. DTO nearly killed me so my memories aren't so fond.

Guessing:

DFW
DAL
IAH
HOU
SAT
???
Good guessing - just missed the People's Republic of Austin.

Not guaranteeing accuracy, but a quick look at the stats published on Airnav shows these above 250 ops/day:

DFW 1853
IAH 1377
DAL 613
HOU 560
AUS 526
DTO 452
SAT 452
FTW 346
AFW 327
TKI 298
ELP 275
DWH 272
ADS 264

452 for DTO is a lot of operations for a single runway. Hope the new strip adds some relief for you guys based there.

I moved there in mid 81 the first time. Finished my PPL in 83 I think, down in Killeen. My local hangout was the north end of DTO playing with Mustangs, SF-260s and what ever else showed up on the ramp. I can't remember when DCI opened on the square, but I remember when it was really small there....like 5 or 6 tables.

Check out FAA ATADS online. I don't have time to pull it up right now, but the numbers there come from the traffic counts recorded daily in the airports' control towers. The Airnav figure comes from spot observations and usually aren't all that accurate.
