I need to get serious.
My son graduated from college in New Rochelle, NY this spring, and now he lives in Brooklyn. He has a nice low mileage Saturn Ion and it has been sitting on the street since May. He has been trying to sell it and advertised it on Craigslist, but no one has called on it. Last month someone broke the rear view mirror off, and he got that fixed. He has also been collecting a bundle of parking tickets. So Friday the wife and I flew out there and brought the car home.

We spent Saturday with my son. He drove the car over to Manhattan and parked it a couple blocks from our hotel on the street. We went out to a museum and strolled through Central Park on Saturday afternoon. Went out to eat Saturday night. My wife and I took off about nine Sunday morning, and had a heck of a time getting out of Manhattan. They were having a triathlon and the police kept directing us the wrong direction. The street that we wanted was being used for the bicycle stage of the triathlon. We ended up on the other side of Central Park. So we went over to Madison Ave. and ran North until we finally worked our way far enough to cut over to the George Washington Bridge. We got across the river there, hit I 80 and got out of town. I hate New York City. Sorry Richard. I like the people there, but I hate the city, so I was happy to get over the bridge and get as far away as I could as fast as I could.

The little car ran like a top and we averaged 32 mpg on the way home. We spent Sunday night in DuBois, PA and last night in Aurora, IL. Got home this afternoon. This week I need to get all of the road grunge off of the car and try to sell it here. I should have better luck. It seems like people in NYC get along fine without a car, and people here need at least a couple of them. So tomorrow it is back to work. So as far as road trips go, this one was a pretty good one. We saw a lot of scenery and enjoyed ourselves all the way home.

That is exactly how I feel when we cross the Miss. river headed west.

I have found people in NYC to be very friendly and nice, For the most part anyway. But I don't know how they can stand to live packed so close to each other and piled on top of one another. But my son loves the city. More power to him. I don't think he will ever move away. I believe that what is good for me is not necessarily good for the next guy, so if they like it, by all means live there. My son likes art and works at a gallery. He wants to make a living selling art, and I will guarantee you that he isn't going to sell much art here in Ames, IA.

Heh.
I like NYC and agree with Max re the people and not wanting to live there.
But, I get edgy as I get closer to the Miss. river from either direction... seems there's something there that doesn't agree with me. But, far enough in either direction and I'm good. (Maybe it has something to do with White Castle)

Max - good luck to your son. He's in a great place to follow his dreams.

My eyes burned the whole time I was east of Iowa until we entered OK headed west. 95 degrees and 90% humidly....... you can have it.

I loved the historic places we visited, but to live there ....... yuck...

WE hit the Baltimore Washington parkway at 0430 and it was bumper to bumper all the way into Va. ...yuck.....

winter snows, summer heat, and bugs that bite, .....yuck...

I went to school in TET, for 2 years and was stationed in DC for 3, and thought every thing was good, but I got orders to SD and 7th Fleet, and never looked back. but now that we have lived in WA for 37 years we even think Socal is yucky.

Good luck to your kids, we know that they must go where the work is, that's why we have one in DC area.
