Just bought GoPro; need advice

After looking through threads on GoPro, I just bought a GoPro Hero3+ Silver Edition.

Even though I read through a ton of stuff on the Internets, I still can't decide whether the Nflightcam GoPro Cockpit Kit is worth it: http://nflightcam.com/store/index.php/gopro/nflightcam-gopro-cockpit-kit.html

I do want to reduce prop blur, and I do want cockpit audio. I am pretty picky about video (I used to shoot video professionally), and I have read that the filter on the Nflighcam kit reduces picture quality :idea:

Is it worth $100?

Yes, I know there are a bunch of threads on GoPro out there right now (Cyber Monday?) and I apologize to add to the clutter. But I couldn't find my answer :nonod:
 
meh, I don't use the filter and I don't see much prop blur on my videos at all. also, I use this ridiculously cheap lapel mic plugged into the gopro then I put the mic in my earpiece and I get great audio for dirt cheap:

you can find them even cheaper than the one I posted, typically the mic itself will literally be PENNIES but the shipping will be like $5.
I'm at work so I can't go thru my vids to find a good one, but here's my first nite flight video just so you can get an idea of the AUDIO (again, not a great example for VIDEO)

You don't need a filter to get rid of the prop blur, just turn the FPS on the camera up to the 60-120 fps range and that will take care of that. It will use more memory storage, but the memory cards you can get are huge.

As far as audio, I recommend a professional audio patch cable for the GoPro3. We carry the standard patch cable, but we also have one that has a USB connection on it so that you can charge the camera while it records. Link: http://www.thesquawkshoppe.com/collections/accessories/hero3

Do you know how much 60-120fps video I can record with 32GB?

We couldn't get the nflight filter to work well. Reduced dynamic range and just generally less 'pop'.

Right now I'm doing as another poster suggested and shooting 60fps. Doesn't turn the prop into a pretty blur, but makes prop artifacts tons less obnoxious. You can see examples here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34grwhdsgxk

For audio, I patch a tascam into the panel. I like this much better than capturing it on-camera and having to keep the camera rolling the whole time just to capture audio. Also, almost everything I do is multi-camera anyway, so having the audio on one of the video streams provides zero advantage.
 
Cockpit audio is a must.

As mentioned before I don't mind prop blur as I can see the throttle inputs. Reading others advice here I have just changed the settings from
1020-30fpm to 720-60 fpm to see if the overall quality gets better.
I assume its my editing that causes the degredation as when I watch it direct from the camera its good.

Would love to be able to charge the gopro while it films as well
 
Hi Josh,

At present it only works with the GoPro Hero3 cameras. In the future we will be looking at other popular models.

For some unknown reason, I get virtually no prop blur in my Sky Arrow...

...if you shoot at 60fps or faster you will get minimal to no prop blur.

I use a nFlightcam which I love but I'm about to pull the trigger on a GoPro to get another angle when I record.

Hey Paul

Thanks, that might be it, looking at the pictures, it looks like it plugs into the headset socket like the one I already have and then another connection to a USB 12v charging adapter ? So it maintains battery charge as well as recording the audio ?

I would have to relocate where I put the camera as the 12v outlet in the 172 I fly in below the throttles and I would not want the cable to risk interfering with the column on the passenger side as I mount the camera on that side window

Hey, Paul left for the west coast this morning, so I can answer your questions.
There is the connection to your headset, and it has an additional USB cable to run to a power source so that it will record AND charge at the same time.
The USB cable is pretty long, and we did that on purpose so that you could have enough slack to route it around any controls. But you could always get a USB extension for a few bucks at Walmart.
