Just being curious, who types of costs are associated with doing the 24 month IFR cert?

Let's say for a Comanche or somthing similar.

I know it has to be done every 24 months.

Should be under $250, including an hour for adjusting or troubleshooting leaks if necessary.

oh wow, I thought It was going to be along the lines of price like an annual.

I have a question along these lines - as a VFR Pilot, will letting my plane's IFR cert lapse have any impact on VFR operations?

Should be under $250

Are you looking to become IFR from VFR? Meaning: do you require equipment and installation? Or... You just need to do your 24month? If you're upgrading, then it can get costly... Otherwise, it's a pretty simple check, in and out the door in 2-3 hours.

I would plan on buying an IFR equipped plane, I was just curious the cost associated with keeping it up to regulations. I know upgrading gets into the big money.

I just had a rather expensive one at $650, but my whole pitot / static was shot. I would guess this is top end.

Wow... Rough! We have had to replace entire systems and it's not a lot of fun, lol. Especially when they were expecting a 3hour in and out test/check. It's not a bad practice to get a copy of your test/check data when you get your 24month done. It'll enable you to see for example, if you're pushing the tolerances of your systems, letting you know if your altimeter or encoder, or transponder is going to need repair soon... If your leak rate is getting worse each time, you can have the pitot static system addressed during your next annual instead of getting hit with a big bill.

You still need to test the transponder every 24 months for VFR.
Only if you want to use it. If you don't plan to fly where a transponder is required, then it doesn't need to be done at all. Just can't turn the unit on.

24mo, so you're talking pitot static and xpdr.

200-300 bucks, for the recert presuming everything checks out ok, which most times it does.

No added value..... $250 and it doesn't take long. I usually wait for it with an appointment.

yep just a recert.

When I buy a plane I don't ever plan on doing true IFR flying but I am going to get the training and keep current if I ever need it.

Correct. Pitot is not required. However, it's necessary to connect to the pitot system to properly check the altimeter system, cross-bleed, etc... There shouldn't be a problem with your shop providing you details about your airspeed accuracy, rate of climb accuracy, and your pitot system leak rate, for no additional cost. So we call it a 24 month Pitot/Static/Transponder check and re-cert.

Like many things, costs are variable. I've paid as little as $50 for a straight xpdr check, and about $450 on the high end. After the $450 one, the guy suggested that I overhaul or replace the altimeter before the next time I had the 2-year check done. Now, I take the altimeter out and have it overhauled for about $175 at a CRS. The xpdr came out this year and went back to the factory for the bench check (and repairs (the encoder is built-in). My Cessna MM gives procedures on how to do the static leak test after reinstalling everything. I even had my ASI overhauled and dial re-screened this year too. The xpdr is back now, and looks shiny and new on my kitchen counter. UPS should bring back my instruments tomorrow or Friday for reinstall... Grand total should be about $350, plus my own labor. YMMV!

I just got my ASI and ALT back from the shop. Both overhauled and dials refaced to look like new. $398, which included return shipping. Awesome!
