Jump Pilot Suicide

I don't think ANY relationship is worth that much. If someone is driven to suicide, the problem was not in the relationship, but in that person. Likewise with murder or anything else.

We like to blame others, but most of the time, the one to blame is staring at you from the bathroom mirror, from running out of gas to hurting ourselves or others because something happened we didn't like.

It is very sad news about this young man.

Absolutely!

Indeed it is. Many years ago a man committed suicide after having a curbside argument with his GF across the street from a local hospital here. He hopped on his motorcycle and accelerated at full throttle into an exterior wall of the hospital. It was a pretty messy scene.

True enough. And, I think, many suicidal people recognize this.

I wonder what it would be like if we could forgive ourselves...

What a waste of a perfectly good airplane :(

BTW I just happened to watch a film last night on IFC about suicides of people jumping off of the Golden Gate. It was really sad to watch. The filmmakers talked with members of the families of these people they also had a camera filming the suicides which was rather strange as you saw the whole thing unfold before you eyes.

Link to the movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0799954/

What was really disturbing was watching the people just watch other people kill themselves.

Reminds me of a TV commercial showing someone jumping off a bridge to his death, shown during one of the shows my 6 year old watches. Thanks a lot, TV advertising jerks.

The sad thing is that the Golden Gate Bridge is a Mecca for suicides. Long ago the Brooklyn Bridge was as well, until a barrier was built to prevent jumpers. Such a barrrier has not been implemented for the Golden Gate bridge despite its feasibility.

Erecting a barrier will not stop a suicide, just change it's location.

And at least there's marine life in the golden gate that will enjoy the food, not so sure about the East River.

I think everyone has the right to determine when their own life should end, but they should not harm anyone else or damage anybody else's property when they check out.

Spaulding Gray chose the East River...

as did Corey Lidle.

I read a fairly long article in the New Yorker about the Golden Gate Bridge and its jumpers. According to it and the experts interviewed, who I am certain know more than I, many suicides are based on opportunity as much as anything, and many are crimes of passion (If suicide can be considered a crime. It is illegal, isn't it?). Those who are foiled in their attempted suicides (like Owen Wilson!) usually don't try again. They said that simple barrier on a bridge can indeed lower suicide rates.

a part of me has always felt bad for the people who fail at suicide. they were feeling so worthless before that they wanted to die and they couldnt even pull that off. I would think that it would give a feeling of serious failure.

As FZ said:

"Go on and get it over with then, find you a bridge and take a jump
Just make sure you do it right the first time, 'cause nothing's worse than a suicide chump."

They said that simple barrier on a bridge can indeed lower suicide rates.

Then THEY can pay for it....and ruin the lines of the beautiful bridge.

Boohoo...I wanna kill myself, well then have at it and let the rest of us that want to live go on with our lives.

We need to get over this "we can save people from themselves" mentality.
