I finally got to the computer that I could post this video of my flight into Johnson Creek airstrip this summer. When the flyincheesehead came to visit this summer he landed here. It is the landing strip for the little town of Yellow Pine, ID. which is 4 miles on down the road. They were having a BackCountry Pilots.org fly-in at the strip. It is the camping spot in the Idaho back country. They have a sprinkler system to keep the grass nice and green. Since they have electricity going by on the way to Yellow Pine, they have hot water and toilets. They have two vans that rent for $8.00 to ride to Yellow Pine. As most of the backcountry strips it lays in the bottom of a canyon and the base leg is a little tight. The elevation is 4900 ft MSL. Land uphill takeoff down and make sure you are down or out by 10:00 in the hot summer months.

Looks like you came in on downwind higher, and had a longer final than we did. Man, that place is a piece of heaven though. :yes:

I had rather be a little farther out than too close. I don't mind a little slow flight to get there. It is not a good Idea to arrive with to much speed and be to high. Bob:idea:

They have a Harmonica Contest each year( google Yellow Pine Harmonica Contest) It is the biggest event of the year. They only had 17 people spend the entire winter there last year. A lot of the time they are snowed in. There are two roads going to Yellow Pine but they just keep one open. And yes a dirt main street. They had a big fire there in 2007 and the Forest Service tried to evacuate the town But the old timers wouldn't budge. If you want to get a flavor for the 1930s, then visit Yellow Pine, ID.
 
I so need to get some more money so I can afford to comeout west and fly with you sometime Bob. That is true beauty. Give me a heads up next time your in Reading PA.
 
Adam, I hope I get to do that. I am trying to get another video I have to post. It is a little longer, Do you think I should keep it short. This shows the trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and a landing at a backcountry spot on the River called the Flying "B" Ranch. I think that if I could show more of the rugged river Canyon it would be more impressive. What do you think, show all or keep it short and just show the landing into the B?

Sometimes, I show videos to students for some inspiration when they are feeling defeated after a lesson.

Ken, I saw a video a while back that I think would be an inspiration to your students. It was about a young girl that had just received her pilots license. She was born with no arms. She flew with her feet in an erocupe, I think it was. I don't know where you can find it and maybe you have allready seen it I think there was a thread on it. It would be a good one for them. Bob

Thanks, Bob. I'll do a search for it.

I spoke with a student tonight about the reality of short field landings. Unless you're landing in Kansas on a short "country" strip, it's likely going to have obstacles to clear. I referenced your videos as examples.

Her name is Jessica Cox, she did the training in AZ IIRC, and it was through Able Flight.

There will be a slight delay as I didn't get up here with that tape. I have a friend looking for it for me. I will post it when I get it found. It was a Mural Society flight. Each year I donate an airplane ride for our towns Mural fund. The same gentleman tries to buy it each year. I am running out of places to take him . We just learned that Benny has been given 6 months to live after being diagnosed with Cancer. Benny was on this flight into the Flying "B" Ranch. I had never flown into this place and I didn't realize it was as tough as it was. I can hardly wait to show it to you. Bob

Closest I've ever come to crashing was going into Flying B, although in this case I was a passenger. Them rocks get mighty close!!! I got to fly the trip out of the B, which was also interesting, but not nearly as death defying.
