Whoa. I'm studying approach plates for an upcoming check-ride. I hate the notes so I've got paper copies of the gov't charts and am tediously starting to add notations in the mins section on inop components, etc. Then I thought about Jepp and how they have everything nicely laid out. I went to their website and found they have a product called Flight Deck that runs on Apple iPADS.

Does Flight Deck, with a subscription for the entire US of A set of charts costing a mere $300, replace Fore Flight at $149 for the Pro version?

Anybody use Flight Deck and find it better than FF?

Would anybody recommend FD this close to a check ride?

I don't think you can get a FD subscription to just a region of the USA / seems to be all or nothing.

Comments would be appreciated.

I use JeppFD and prefer it to FF for IFR stuff.

That said, I don't think it 'replaces' FF. ForeFlight offers a lot more (VFR/Airport info/weather...etc).

So, if you can afford it (or your company is paying for the Jepp subscription), do both. If you had to chose just one, I'd probably stick with FF.

There is an iPad app called Jeppesen Mobile FD and another one called Jeppesen Mobile TC. The FD app has more features than the TC app but I found the FD program to be buggy and not intuitive. Therefore I stick to the TC app which is just the charts. I can't comment on the cost. The Jeppesen Flight Deck program installed in the airplane came with four licenses for computers, one of which I am using.

I have not tried Foreflight [stupid autocorrect] so I can't compare the two programs. I prefer the Jepp charts to the NACO charts but much of that is because I've used Jepp forever.

I use both. For personal flying and weather, ForeFlight can't be beat. But Jepp charts are nice (and the standard for my company) so I use FlightDeck Pro to prepare or upcoming trips. Since the iPad isn't approved by our OpSpec I can't use it officially in flight, but it's nice to review ahead of time. Soon (supposedly) we are getting Surface Pros with the Jepp FD Pro, at which point all will be right with the world! I hate paper charts!

We are getting ours supposedly next week in training. The instructors already have them and DFW got theirs this week.

Did you like that AUG 20 Jepp update ? It's still sitting undone on my hotel desk.

Do you know if the Jepp app is able to accommodate geo-referencing of your position on both enroute charts and approach plates using a Bad Elf Pro+????:dunno:

Jepps software is better than it used to be, but it's still got issues with it. I have both FD (IFR) and Foreflight and have tried the FD (VFR) and I still tend to go back to Foreflight.

Yes, the current version of FD IFR has the plates georeferenced. I don't know what GPS units it supports but it works fine with the built in one on my iPad. The older version only had georef on the taxi plates (though I know the charts were georef'd because I have had them in my MX20 for ages).

Yes. Bad Elf does work with Jepp. Stratus does not.

I use FD Pro at work and combined with Goodreader have every manual for our company. Our IPads do not have GPS and guys were using external things like Bad Elf but the company had Jepp alter the software to take away that ability (they said Jepp did it because of the FAA and class of EFB ). I much prefer Jepp approach plates simply because I have used them for forty years. If I had a choice and I do in general aviation, I would use Foreflight with my Stratus 2S all the time. With the moving maps I have at work the only reason to have a GPS moving map on an IPad is for geo referenced taxi charts. That is a big safety advantage.

The company is getting new IPads next year with GPS and will have geo referenced charts.

To answer your question and it not being a perfect world...I would learn NOS charts and use Foreflight with a Stratus.

Thanks to all who have answered and thank you MD11 for the last paragraph!

What will you do if your device shuts down. I was on a VOR7 into N40 and app shut down while IMC. I have a paper chart on my lap all the time for just this reason.

This is another big advantage of ForeFlight: you can have it on the iPhone as a backup. JeppFD does not work on the iPhone.

I use Garmin Pilot, so I have that on my iPad and an Android tablet, the backup to those is a PDF of the approach plates on my phone and if I'm expecting actual conditions a printout of the expected approach(es). And if that all goes wrong I'll ask the controller to read me the approach.

Thankfully, I don't have to update them!

I'll carry multiple EFBs before I'll go back to paper. What if your chart blew out a window? :dunno:

I just look at my MFD with all the fixes and altitudes.

Paper is just to heavy for my aircraft, especially when flying up and down the coast.i I'll stick with FF.
