How do you guys organize your charts? I bought several Staples 1" Binders that fit Jepps and was wondering the best way to organize them. I still have a week before my training starts but I was already thinking about it.

My thought was:

1" - Current Trip and Hub Charts
1"/2" - Systemwide Charts
1"- Jepp Manual & Revisions

Not permitted to use an EFB?

Nope. Company just got the shipment from Microsoft but they haven't released them into use beyond the test crews. Even if I get a Surface EFB by end of training I'll still have to carry paper for another year or two.

I still have five leather binders (4 2" and 1 1") that contain the last printed version of the Jepps I used. I put them in the binders tabbed by state. Depending on how much filing you like to do and which update service you use, you can either file them in place or put the changes up front and scan them for a newer plate. The small binder was used for the airport director and other J-Aid stuff.

Back when Independence Air went under I became the proud owner of several hundred plate binders from them. I only needed a couple and pretty much abandoned the rest of them.

We're expecting ours in September. I can't wait. I HATE paper! Thankfully we hav Airside kits in the meantime so we don't have to carry or update them.

Yeah we have to carry and update ours.

Still have any I can happly relieve you of?

I'll be switching to paper jeeps come next week for my new job as well. I definately prefer Jepps to gov't charts, but the idea of going back to paper....not so much. How much did the staples binders run you?

6.99ea for the black plastic ones. A LOT better then the $$$ Jepp asks for.

I'd ask people at your particular operation as to how they organize them. Personally, I'd be spending time doing other studying versus screwing around with organizing jepps before starting training.

As for mine, they're sorted however iOs sorts them on the iPad.

For IFR paper charts organization I've never come across anything better than the IFR Flight File (link to Amazon but available from others -

Used it for years before going paperless.

For general Jepp chart organization, Jepp's own binder tabbing system works.

No, but they sure are heavy to haul around with your luggage works 22", lunch pail, and what ever else the big time RJ pilots have these days.

on Ebay you can find the nice leather ones for pretty cheap.. I have (3 )2-inch binders that
are overflowing.....I organize them into United and Delta...then per the Jepp organization system (arrivals in the front/departures/10-9/IAPS)

I'll look into that thanks! Thankfully we only fly for one airline per whatever base you bid.

You sections do you use? I have the basic three pocket and small storage Brightline.

I'm guessing he was joking about the brightline. Kinda like I was joking about the LW 22"

I've had a B10 Classic for several years hat I absolutely love. But it turned out to be a bit too big for my flight deck in the CRJ so I got a B4 Swift configuration which is working out perfectly.

Actually, I was only half joking. I see a number of Brightlines on the line and I get queried about mine from almost every captain. I'm a huge Brightline fan.

I have a B7 and it's practically empty. The longer I fly the less I carry in it. It currently carries my gym shoes and a passport. Nothing more. There was a time when it was full though.

Mine has headset, Stratus, sunglasses, spare eyeglasses, earplugs, spare batteries, flashlight, iPad, MacBook Air (and soon a company issued Surface Pro....keeping one slot saved for that!) also has my passport/certificate case and my insulated coffee mug in a side pocket!

The FlyI binders are long gone. I still have my leather jepp binders.

I pad, can't carry all the jepps they weigh too much.

Yep, I carry the Jepps and NACO charts on the iPAD. I also have Jepps in the panel. I even gave up printing out backup copies long ago.

I don't even buy Jepps anymore, but when I did I just stuffed them in to the binder and threw the enroutes in the flight bag. The chief instructor at the school where I did my IR was really big on organizing them. I never got the point of spending an hour organizing the binder when all I needed to do was to pull out the plates and enroute chart I needed for the trip.

The cool thing about Brightlines is that they can be configured to be as big or as small as you want.

I carry one with the headset center section plus a front, a rear, and the GPS pouch on the side. I only need the center section because I take my Bose A20s out of the plane at some airports. I keep the handheld radio in the pouch but it stays in the airplane 99% of the time.

When I was doing my IFR training, I took out the center section and just mated the front face (the one with the three pockets) to the rear. iPad in the rear and backup ipad went in between the front/rear faces. Super minimalist Brightline that way.

...sorry for the threadjack.
