Anyone ever done one of these? If so, what's involved?

I did not see the STC listed on the FAA web pages. Do you have the STC number?

No, I don't. I'm pretty sure it exists, however. I know I flew in one many years ago that had wing tanks installed, and the owner said the tanks were (back then) available from Piper.

Then again, if that was the case, maybe it didn't require an STC, just a 337?

Could be on the 337. But they normally like to see existing paperwork approval from another install.

We just went through completing a 337 for a solid state voltage regulator on the Pawnee, the old one was toast and corroded. The solid state regulator had been approved on other airframes, with same engine, or same generator.. but not the Combination of Airframe, engine, generator of the Pawnee, and it had STCs for installation on other aircraft.

So, paperwork and inspection were required for a field approval 337 to make the electrons legal.

That process is known as a Deviation to an existing STC. It is done at FSDO by Field approval.

A guy in NoCal was trying to sell an L4 with wing tanks a while back. You might check Barnstormers to see if it's still there. If so, call and ask about his paperwork. Are you sure you want to solo from the front seat?

That's a drawback, but I could live with it given the big picture.

The basic story is that I'd like to spend some time flying around with my dad, who always wanted to fly, but couldn't finish his ticket because he had us kids to support. The only airplane he ever flew was a Cub. Now he has too many health problems to make even flying SP realistic (which he realizes).

I have some Cub time, too, and I enjoy flying them; so I'm passively considering buying a Cub when the economy recovers enough that I can afford it. But I'd like to be able to make the trip between where I live and where he lives without a fuel stop, if at all possible.

One of the Cubcrafters' models would be another option, but then we're talking a lot more money.

I'll check Barnstormers in the meantime. Thanks!
