Rolling power blackouts have already started. My power just came back on after a 15 minute outage. It's 99 degrees. And it's only April.

Looks like I'll have to go out and get a much larger UPS ($$$) to make sure the email server can withstand sustained 15+ minute outages this summer.

$70+ a barrel oil, too. Time to start thinking about selling the plane.

I'm not sure whether to say "welcome to deregulation" or "fine energy policy we have here".

It's gonna be a long, hot summer.

Sigh.

Geesh Bill! D/FW hit 101 today--a definite record. Feels like July!

Don't say things like time to sell the plane---Geesh!

Did you see what they paid the Chaiman of Exxon/Mobile over the last four years! Guess I should get out of real estate and into O&G!

$70? Think it'll stay that low? I have $4 a gallon in our work fuel price pool. But I'm not selling the plane.:D

GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work!

This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola
executive It came from one of his engineer buddies
who retired from Halliburton. It's worth your
consideration.

Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit
close to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might
go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We
need to take some intelligent, united action.

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea. This makes
MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain
day" campaign that was going around last April or May!
The oil companies just laughed at that because they
kn! ew we w ouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by
refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience
to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever
thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can
really work. Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at
about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently
$2.79 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the
oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us
to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at
$1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to
teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not
sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each
day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we
are going to see the price of gas come down is if we
hi! t someo ne in the pocketbook by not purchasing their
gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.
How?

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop
buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if
we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T
purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies
(which now are ), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not
selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their
prices. If they reduce their prices, the other
companies will have to follow suit. But to have an
impact , we need to reach literally millions of Exxon
and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now,
don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and
I'll explain how s! imple i t is to reach millions of
people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us
send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and
those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =
3,000)...and so on , by the time the message reaches
the sixth group of people, we will have reached over
THREE MILLION consumers.

If those three million get excited and pass this on to
ten friends each, then 30 million people will have
been contacted! If it goes one level further, you
guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people.
That's all!

We can reach 300 million people. Trust me on this one.
I'm real good at M! ath.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of
receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be
contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you
didn't think you and I had that much potential, did
you! Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message
on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL
THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP
THEM DOWN.
THIS CAN REALLY WORK!

I see two problems. One is that it can be rather difficult to determine who actually supplies the gas at the local cut rate station. Not buying from a Mobil or Exxon franchised station doesn't mean you aren't buying from the company with that name as the independents will buy fuel from whoever offers the best terms. The other is that IMO the independents are the ones who control the prices for the most part. Sure, the big brand stations typically have slightly higher prices, but they still pay attention to the independent down the street, and those independents are operating with slimmer margins and must adjust the pump prices often to maintain some sort of profit.

My only problem with it is that there's a local chain of Mobil stations that I buy most of my gas from. Why? Well, they don't do the "media price adjustment" thing. You know, the newspaper will have a story about how gas prices "will" go up and why, and that same day everyone else in town has already raised their prices. This chain holds them steady until their cost actually goes up, and brings them down like everyone else. They also have the nicest (and cleanest) stations around. A company like that will get my business regardless of where the gas comes from.

And I here I was thinking that mid 60s in mid-April was too danged hot.

Man, I really need to move to one of the poles, or to Greenland, or somewhere where it never gets above 60 on the hottest day of summer.

sigh.

You'd get nice performance out of the plane, but finding paved runways might be a problem - also, 23-hour days/nights - unless you switch from one pole to the other every summer/winter... I would think ND would be cold enough though, even in the summer, no?

Bill,

Power companies usually do maintenance on their plants in the spring and fall to prepare for the peak seasons. Hot or cold extremes during this "maintenance season" play havoc with this plan as high electrical usage will quickly exceed generating capacity at that time. Hopefully the full capacity of the local electric utility will be ready and available when the hot season really begins.

Good luck.
