Final Approach
So, I stayed at the Hyatt Place Long Island. Company wasn't sure if I was going to fly that day or not so they asked that I get a late checkout. Okay, so at around 10:00 in the am I coordinate with the front desk and we agree to a late checkout at 1:00pm and after that a half days rate until 6:00pm. Great, I tell the company.
I'm back in my room and around 11:30 a maid walks into my room. I guess she knocked first but I had headphones on and didn't hear. Grrrr. My bad I guess, I should have thrown the latch. I did have the 'Do Not Disturb' sign out and a quick check with the front desk would have confirmed my late checkout.
So then around noon I get word from the company that I'm staying another night. So I re-up the room and specifically tell the front desk that I don't need any room service and to instruct housekeeping accordingly and also relayed the story of the maid entering my room before. "No problem" she says.
Then, at 1:15'ish, I'm sitting on my bed and hear a knock followed by, "Housekeeping". OMG, I know the 'Do Not Disturb' sign is still out there. I get up and as I'm walking to the door it swings open and there's another maid...in my room. I really gotta get in the habit of throwing that latch.
She apologises and backs out of the room and I notice my 'Do Not Disturb' sign is missing. I ask where it is looking around and she says she doesn't know. Then I see it...it's right there in her hand between some papers and a clipboard. I tell her I see it right there and she claims it's not it and offers to let me read the paper as proof. Whatever, she's caught in a lie.
Look, I should have latched the door. But twice in 3 hours a stranger walked into my room with a 'Do Not Disturb' sign displayed. The first time a late checkout had been arranged and the second another night had been paid for with explicit instructions to housekeeping to stay out.
In my mind it's worse than if I just walk into your house. If I just open your front door and walk in uninvited then I've invaded your living room. A hotel room is your living room and bathroom and bed room all rolled into one. People do very private stuff in those rooms and I feel like a major breach of privacy has occured.
So...Is This Hotel a Jerk or am I over reacting?
