Is There a Gold Medal for Being Stupid?

It seems Michael Phelps hasn't learned good judgment.

For Michael Phelps, another behavior issue

Michael Phelps is at least as tech savvy as most people in his generation. He certainly knows that 1) almost every person his age carries a cellphone and that 2) nearly every one of those phones has a camera.

Yet Phelps, surprisingly, either did not know about or chose to ignore the ramifications of all those camera phones: A celebrity whose tens of millions in sponsorship money depends on image cannot do anything stupid in public, because someone will have taken a picture or video of the indiscretion.

And not all those people will feel inclined to let what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas.

Should have shown better judgement, but he's only 23, raised in a bubble his whole life. Swimmers have no life; Olympian swimmers even less. I'm sure he has the maturity level of a teen. He's getting out and experiencing life. Good for him.

Pot? Performance enhancing? Eh, he's contrite, he owned up to a mistake. I hate all the hypocritical "Heavens, what an awful person, he's no longer qualified to sell bathing suits" blather.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Overall, I don't think it is a big deal. But, those who buy the products of his sponsors have a funny way of determining what is a big deal. The marketing executives of those sponsors tend to follow suit.

Enjoying life? Sure. But, just know how some seemingly minor actions may come back to bite ya in the rear end.
 
Well I was not buying anything with his name on it anyways. So I could care less if another spoiled athlete blows his reputation. When you have more to lose you should be extra careful, all this shows me is that he has bad judgment. I do think it is good that he is owning up to it. Perhaps that is the real win in this whole mess.

Now if we want to talk about pot and whether it should be legal or not. Well that is another ball of wax. It seems to me that pot is not any worse than the legal drug of alcohol. But for the time being it is illegal so that means if you use it you are breaking the law. Break the law and there are consequences to face.

Reminds me... why are Speedos legal in this country, no matter what one's body looks like, yet marijuana is the devil's weed? :D I think if you're over 18 and wearing a Speedo you should get a ticket or something. "But I was high!" is no excuse. :D
 
Most of the athletes I've know have not been what I would call brain trusts. There have been exceptions to be sure, but the majority were and are somewhat dim.
 
In December 2004, he got 18 months' probation after pleading guilty to drunk driving. He was just 19 when that occurred in Maryland, where it was also illegal for Phelps to have been drinking.

Want to guess how quick he apologized after that incident?

Kids do stupid things. Celebrities are more likely to get caught. And subsequently also more likely to get off with a slap on the wrist. C'est la vie. Won't affect his sponsors I bet. He's still a massive gold medal winner.

When I was working with academically gifted students, it was surprising how many of them were also physically gifted. It really isn't the either/or that we sometimes think.

I believe that being academically gifted helps with the physical ones. And, to the point, I think Phelps is quite intelligent. (He did a dumb thing, though.)

I just found out this morning that the head cheerleader for the Arizona Cardinals works at my company and has a BSEE from ASU. Kind of does a number on the stereotype of cheerleaders, doesn't it?

Not really seemed like all the cheerleaders where I went to college were EE's: Elementary Education majors. :D
 
What's going to hurt Michael Phelps isn't a single photo of him taking a bong hit (have we forgotten the 18-year-old Michael Phelps with the DWI?). Based on seeing photos of him with a different "girlfriend" at his side, at a different club or party, in a different city, every few days, I think the bigger problem is the possibility that he's going to show up at the next olympics looking like John Belushi in a speedo.
