I took Sir Harry Garner for a flight in my Super Cub. He was Briton's Chief Scientist between the wars.

He was knighted by King George "V", I "think?"
I have a picture of him and Lady Garner, which I want to publish on Wiki.

I can't find when, why, and for why, he was knighted. You'd think this type of info would be readily available.

I give up, I've been searching on and off for months.

????Thanks

Well I decided to take your Google-fu challenge.

I found only this one reference noting H. M. Garner C.B as being appointed Chief Scientist to the Ministry of Supply.

CB is in fact a British Order of Chivalry: Order of Bath, Companion. It has been given to senior civil servants. George V revived it at one point.

I tried to find lists of members that included his name, but failed.

I don't think he slayed a dragon, or anything exciting like that. But his kids are eligible to be married in Westminster Abbey, so there's that. :)

Catmandu........Thanks. That puts one more peg in a hole. I'd also like to publish my picture of him and Lady Garner on Wiki. But don't have sufficient permissions.

If any one does.....can I send you the picture?

Actually, here is the picture:

Were you current for "knight flight?"

Flight Magazine notes the award on their June 17, 1948 edition here: http://www.flightglobal.com/FlightPDFArchive/1948/1948 - 0902.PDF

ORDER OF THE BATH
C.B. (Civil)
Harry Mason Garner, F.R.Ae.S.,
Principal Director, Scientific Research
(Air), M.O.S.;

A similar notation in the London Gazette June 1948 here: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/38311/pages/3367/page.pdf

He was indexed several times in the AP (according to their card file):

May 29, 1952 he "Forecasts airplanes that zoom straight up on take-off; tells of atom-powered design."

August 8, 1952 : Britain's supply ministry described new "nerve gases" that can kill in seconds.

October 3 1952: British explode atom bomb in island test off NW Australia.

Thanks pilots of America. I am working on my WIKI permissions. One has to register, and then do 10 edits and wait 4 days before posting a picture is allowed.

Funny, way back in 1966, I never knew that the old man from Britain was an aviation derived knight. I just thought he was a Chinese porcelain friend of my father's. He was so humble, but a wise old owl. It might have been the last time he controlled an airplane, most probably. Although, I think he was an aerodynamicist, not a pilot.

Still, I like that title "Chief Scientist!"

He's written a couple of books on porcelain.

That is where I met him. In the early 60's my father did the 3D photography for one of his books. I was a teenager and carried around all the big suitcases of gear. I carried them down to the lower basement bowels of the British Museum. They have a lot os stuff down there that no one ever sees.

The BM has the world's finest collection of Imperial Chinese porcelain, which they pretty much stole from China.

And a lot of the other good stuff was spirited away to Taiwan with Chiang Kai-Shek and is on display in the museum there.

I have a lot of edits on Wikipedia if you want some assistance with that. I edited quite a bit years ago but not much lately. Their copyright requirements on pictures are stiff. Did you take the picture?

Also, is that the resolution that you want to use?

edit: Here is the main page on image use and a bit of policy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_use_policy

"User-created images
Wikipedia encourages users to upload their own images. All user-created images must be licensed under a free license, such as the GFDL and/or an acceptable Creative Commons license, or released into the public domain, which removes all copyright and licensing restrictions. When licensing an image, it is best practice to multi-license under both GFDL and a Creative Commons license."

My father, who died in 1965, took the picture. It is in my possession. I scanned and enhanced the photo. I can email you a slightly better resolution photo. It is scanned from one side of a 3D "Realist" format slide. If it went into public domain it would be fine with me. Photo credit should go to William B. Gruber

You can just attach the picture you want uploaded to a post here. I will upload it to Wikimedia Commons for you and you can add it to the Wikipedia article yourself. If you do not want to edit the article yourself, I suggest you post a message to the original author of the article below and work with him. But I will upload the pic for you.
