If you start down the path to a medical and fail, he will report that, as he should. If you consult with him in advance of applying for a medical, there is nothing to report, and he will not submit anything until he is sure you will pass.

Once the official exam starts as an AME he reports. If you consult him as a doctor PRIOR to submitting the Med X Press when the official exam starts, it's confidential. As long as you FULLY disclose everything as part of the consult, you will know where you stand prior to the exam. There are no surprises. He also helps you navigate the poorly written medxpress form to ensure full disclosure. You just have to make sure you are truthful and transparent.

Exactly. He's confidential until you use him as an AME and formally submit your FAA medical application. If you schedule a consult without submitting the "paperwork" he will advise if you can be certified and what you will need to do before you formally use him (or anybody else) as an AME. He wears two hats, one as a physician who is exceptionally knowledgeable about the FAA medical standards and another as an AME. You must be certain he's wearing the right hat when you see him. If he tells you that you can't be certified he will not inform the FAA but don't think about going to a different AME and withholding information. If you use him as an AME he is very good at getting airmen certified expeditiously.

You ought to ask Dr Chien that but he's the one who advised me that if he pulls your aeromedical form from the FAA website he either has to grant, defer, or deny the application and deferral/denial has bad consequences for the applicant. IIRC he also said that nothing prevents you from showing him a copy of your filled out form (easily printable from the website) BEFORE he pulls the file so he can advise you on whether or not it's in your best interest to proceed.

If you need some sort of SI or are a "tough case" there is none better.
I only hope that someone is there to fill his shoes when I'm old and have issues getting my medical. If that happens before I'm old, Dr. Bruce will be the only place I'll go.

i wish he didnt leace POA, ive heard a lot of advice about never disclosing but frankly i would rather just figure it out...i think its beatable, and if not im leaving the country, im depressed bc of the faa, and may just leave the country if it doesnt, i know im a good pilot, in fact, ive dealt with my emergencys, kept calm got us down safely.... but i want i want to be the best, THE BEST, and i need to be honest in order to be

My last medical had some 'issues', so I engaged Dr Chen to help me with it.
My experience with Dr Chen was nothing short of remarkable. For the price of about 2 or 3 hours of flying I suddenly had an expert AME who seemed be available almost 24/7 to respond to email questions and to communicate with my local doctors.
Contrast that with the surgeon who was paid on the order of $40K to replace my OEM knee with an aftermarket part. AFAIK this surgeon did a good job, but he was never available to patients for more than 3 minutes at a time, if you could get an appointment at all. He pretty much delegated patient contact to his PA and nurse.
Dr Chen went the extra mile for me, he's a huge asset to the U.S. aviation community.
Highly recommended.

I think the MC should try to lure him back. And remember what chased him off everyone. All this faceless contact tends to make all of us less sensitive to how things are interpreted and whether we mean to be abusive, homorous, conciliatory, or a smartass, we do not necessarily come off as WE intend. Temper your comments. Watch your delivery. Interpret how your comment MAY be perceived.
A little care will go a long way.

Oh, he's here. He's just not logging in. He's made a couple of comments over on Red about comments he's read here since leaving. So, he's obviously visiting here but he's not done "punishing us" yet.
"Run-off?" No one is run-off, rather they choose to leave. And Dr. Bruce dished out far more venom and vitriol than he ever received here. But, once he was on the receiving end, he picked up his toys and left.
While I miss his advice and wisdom I don't miss his vitriol and drama.

Dr. Chien seems to be one of the few who specialize full time n "difficult cases".
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester Mn has AME who routinely deal with difficult cases.
It would seem likely there are more who pursue this aspect of AME, but we don't hear their names often.

I'm using him for an SI right now, and have nothing but good things to say about him. Very competent and responsive, knows his stuff inside and out. Go for it.

You do need Dr. Chien, or someone of his caliber (is there ?) To fight this. Basically, you will have to show convincingly that the diagnosis was incorrect.

No he wasn't. His thin skin and childish reactions are legendary. A real pro can take some disagreement in stride but not him. Jay had an interesting point. May have been incorrect but we'll never know since the reaction was so far from professional.
If I had followed his medical recommendations regarding cancer screening I'd be dead right now. He just demanded everyone follow the BS mantra being pushed by insurance companies and the government:

Do you have a link or links to the proof that the recommendation is wrong? I'd like to read more about that.
