Within the last 2 minutes, after a phone call where my phone worked properly, I have lost the handset normal phone speaker. If I put it to Speakerphone, it works fine. Any clues to fixing this? It's an unlocked 32GB 3GS. Remember, I'm in Bali at the moment and wont be able to "trade it in".

9 times out of 10, this is a problem that can be solved by pulling the battery in a normal phone.

You can't do that in the iPhone.

Why do I bring this up (not to rub it in)? Because if someone knows the equivalent on an iPhone, it will probably solve the problem.

Otherwise, doing a restore using iTunes might help. Its rarely a hardware issue with the phone when it happens as described (as long as water was not involved anywhere along the line).

Well, if a reboot will fix it, just hold the power button for about 10 seconds until you get the "slide to power off" slider and then slide it. Wait a few seconds, and press the power button to boot it back up.

Otherwise, you can back up the iPhone by plugging it into your computer, and when it's done you can click "Restore" (which is not a restore of the backup, but a wipe of the phone). Then you can restore it from the backup.

A *call* to Apple might help, or visit support.apple.com or even Google.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

Did it get wet? I've had this problem before when water got in the normal speaker. Once it dries out it'll be fine (few hours). Use the headphones in the mean time (if you have em).

I panicked once when my son chewed on it and got drool in the speaker. I couldn't hear out of it until it dried out. Another time I dropped it in a snow bank. Same deal.

It just fixed itself....:dunno::dunno::dunno:

Yeah that always worries me, but in this case I'd bet it was a little moisture.

Another thing you can do (for future issues) is hold the "home" key (round one at bottom) and the top button for a few seconds and you will reboot the phone.

... Why do I bring this up (not to rub it in)? ...
On my old HTC Mogul WM6 phone, pulling the battery was a regular occurrence. On my iPhone (and similarly every ipod I've had before it), I've always been able to reboot it using only the buttons. I don't ever recall being in a situation where the thing was frozen, and I had no way to reset it.

I've never had to pull the battery..But I did rip it completely apart last week to replace a switch. All you need is a #00 Philips and a few minutes of time.

water, I'd bet.

Probably, it had been cold soaked all night in the airconditioning and I took it outside in sweltering heat and humidity so it probably formed some condensation same as my glasses, May also have gotten some sweat in it from the previous phone call.

are you in the harbor by Nusa Dua?

This has happened a couple times to me. Usually lint or moisture in the headset port tricking the phone into thinking a headset cord was plugged in. Inserting and removing a headset jack a couple of times always fixed it.

Or was this an excuse to tell us all you are in Bali?

Considering all the people on this site that are on my Facebook list, I figured most knew and had seen the pictures. Thanks for the headset jack trick, that sounds very likely, I'll try that next time it happens. I can't figure out why nobody makes waterproof cell phones.

I seem to remember, working at T-Mobile, that Motorola was planning on releasing one.

Never heard anything more about it though.

Verizon has (or at least had) a few:
- the Casio G'zOne Type-V http://www.andybrain.com/extras/gzone-review.htm
- the Motorola Barrage
- the Motorola Entice

Look for "military grade" phones.

Edit: Don't know of any smartphones like that, though.
