iPhone 4 Press Conference Today

Is there some readon you will not answer my questions on how you got it to work nor how you can make the icons bigger?

I got busy. :D
GAH! Stupid Youtube....one sec.

Interesting. Like many other Mac Users I get the error message that it does not recognize the device when it is plugged in. This is inline with what Moto customer service said as well about them not supporting the Mac. I have found that sometime some third party app on the Android device work around this problem. What apps have you loaded?

Pompous quote of the day

Ass.

The felating of Steve Jobs by the faithful will always continue, no matter what. Remember, it's the brand that matters....

All hail Steve....

I have a bunch, but it worked out of the box.

FWIW, every once in a while, I do get a weird error message about low voltage or something. I disconnect it and reconnect it and it works just fine.

You should tell Steve Jobs that. He is of a different opinion (according to the conference).

Its Consumer Reports. They have pretty accurate tests. To claim otherwise is just fanboyism getting in the way.
I learned ANOTHER new word today. New for me, probably ancient for you.

Nick, you missed the number in the press conference that is really damaging.

Nick here is a screen shot of the error I get when plugging the Milestone in with just a USB cable.

As you can see no icon appears. The Mac Book just does not recognize the Milestone at all. It is as if there is some driver or software missing that would allow the phone to be known as a USB drive.

I used VmWare and booted in Windows XP on my Mac, plugged in the Milestone and got a message that the computer was "Installing Device Driver Software" and "Motorola Device Drivers" version 4.4.0 mind you.

Then it launched a Moto Device portal on the browser along with displaying an icon for the Milestone in the MyComputer folder under portable devices. When I click in that icon from Windows I am able to access the phone.

Also any info you have on how to make those icons bigger would still be useful. I have not found any configuration parameter that changes them.

Yes, fanboys are funny because of their zealotry. They're way too _into_ things like mundane consumer electronics products, get all excited, have passionate views about companies and brands, and they let this passion interfere with their ability to make rational, measured judgments.

So, for instance, when somebody gets all obsessed about the flaws of a phone he doesn't own, and a second person responds with the suggestion that it doesn't really appear to be all that big a problem, that second person is (as I understand it) what we call a "fanboy".

If we have fanboy, then we need a name for the first person above. You know, the opposite of fanboy -irrational hatred for a brand or device. 'Idjit' is already taken...hmmm...

"Hater." Pretty simple. Ed and Nick are examples of iHaters. ;)

I don't buy Apple stuff because of some odd love affair with Steve Jobs. I buy them because they work and they work well, because if they stop working I can talk to an American (in person even) to get them fixed, and the entire user experience tends to be fantastic because they put a lot of time into getting the little details right.

Apple's not perfect - I was not satisfied with the build quality of my previous MacBook Pro (though my current "unibody" MBP has been beat to hell and not a single dent, love it); and there are some little details that seem to have escaped them. But they still tend to beat the heck out of other products on the market for the average user.

Nick may jump in here and point out the things that the iPhone can't do that Android can, but in many cases the things that Android "can" do are things that only geeks can/will do while the iPhone works very well for the average user. As an example, my mother is an "average user" and loves her iPhone. When I got my iPad I let her see it and she didn't give it back for four hours! (I was quite shocked by her reaction to it, usually her reaction to any new technology is "That's silly, what would I want that for?")

So, I consider myself to be a very satisfied customer. Some people spell that "f-a-n-b-o-y." Frankly, I don't care what they think - I'm still a satisfied customer.

So, the points that really matter from the press conference, and pretty much confirm my suspicion that "Antennagate" is mostly an invention of the press:

1) While the bars go down, there's not much of an increase in dropped calls (or customer complaints about them): Less than a 1% increase over the 3GS in dropped calls.

2) Actual iPhone 4 customers appear to be very satisfied: The early return rate of iPhone 4's is less than one third of the early return rate that the 3GS had. So people that actually own an iPhone 4 (as opposed to haters and click-grubbing "news" sites) don't seem to mind.

3) While Consumer Reports "Can't recommend the iPhone 4" due to the antenna "issue" (which, BTW, they are basing on "bars" which is even sillier than basing computer reviews on megahertz was back in the day), the iPhone 4 is still Consumer Reports' highest-rated smartphone.

I downloaded that new update, 4.01 or some such thing, and the only thing that seems different is that the bars are easier to see. I agree with Kent in that most people don't care about the minute technical details of their phone or even their computer. I've had this iPhone 3G for about 2 years and have been generally satisfied with it. If I was going to replace it I would get a new iPhone but I don't see any reason to replace it as long as it is still working. I never understood the whole cult about Apple or the haters and fanboys, but I have no particular feeling about Microsoft either. They're both just companies. The only Microsoft OS I ever had a problem with was ME. I've used XP, Vista and 7 with no particular problem. The only OS I have really disliked was Ubuntu. I loaded it on a laptop for a while as an experiment and ultimately went back to XP.

Fair enough. For me - the word "free" speaks to the masses more than the words "Only $1.99 each for everything you'll ever want."

Don't be ridiculous. CR's tests are definitive. Didn't you watch the video I posted? ;)

Yay, point for point:

1) While the bars go down, there's not much of an increase in dropped calls (or customer complaints about them): Less than a 1% increase over the 3GS in dropped calls.

Over what timeframes? That was the part that I did not see. Even Steve Jobs himself sounded humiliated when he admitted the increase of dropped calls, so I would not be surprised to find massaged data (not incorrect, mind you, simply massaged).

2) Actual iPhone 4 customers appear to be very satisfied: The early return rate of iPhone 4's is less than one third of the early return rate that the 3GS had. So people that actually own an iPhone 4 (as opposed to haters and click-grubbing "news" sites) don't seem to mind.

Based upon a wait for an answer, and the phone still being in buyer's remorse period, I'd bet that will increase dramatically.

Consumer reports was a lot more intense than "looking at bars," and they were able to prove that calls drop as well, so that's not true. They also used signal strength in decibels, not "bars," so that's also not true. As Jobs admits, they found a real problem. Jobs response was simply: Everyone has this problem, see, look, hold the Blackberry in a really uncomfortable way, and it will do it too.

What he missed was that the iPhone does it when held in a normal fashion. So its not the same at all.

I watched CNET's HD vidcast of the conference. It looked liked the guy with his hand on those competitive phones in Apple's video was going out of his way to cover up the body, as in on the last two they showed, as Steve is saying, "...just as you naturally would use the phone..." the guy's fingers are wrapped around the face of the phone as if you would put your fingertips between the phone and your ear when you "naturally used the phone."

Another weird thing was the AntennaSys blogger said it couldn't be any kind of DC connectivity between the two case/antennas at the seam that was the problem - just blocking the antenna with you being "an empty bag of mostly water." Then Steve several times mentioned "X marks the spot" and highlighted the plastic seam and said that was the problem spot.

I'll guess that the seam is the tip/top of the antenna and the highest signal area of the wave and touching there in particular most detunes the antenna.

Don't be ridiculous. CR's tests are definitive.

Interesting thing is that "definitive" testing ranked iPhone 4 their #1 smart phone against a pretty complete list of smart phones. I'm not sure given that most other smart phones do the same thing with how you hold it, what CR's rationale was for using this "feature" as a disqualification for not recommending it. Either way, I agree with Harry, their recommendation means nothing to me in selecting a phone - a dishwasher maybe, but nothing like this.

Scott,

Did you ever get USB working? I just saw this post today and thought of your problems with it...

Nope never got it to work. I talked to our developers and they tell me it won't work. I am still stumped as to why Nick's work. It makes me think that a 3rd party app is doing some of the work for the connection. I am also still waiting for him to say how he got the icons bigger. I am able to hook up via bluetooth and WiFi to the phone. If I stick the USB cable on it I can charge the phone but the Mac will not recognize it as anything.

His phone is rooted. That is not how a stock android phone behaves. He's got his phone rooted, and the sd card is partitioned into 2 drives, one of which holds his applications.

He's smart enough to root the device, but dumb enough to not know how to mount the drive?

WTF?

Just for ****s and giggles, I just wiped my DROID and hooked it up to my bosses Macbook Pro.

It mounted without a problem.

I don't understand why the Milestone won't mount but the DROID will. Too bad we're not closer together to see this first hand and see if we can get it working. It must suck for you not being able to get it working, not having the support of the manufacturer to help either.

Feel like flying down to NC this week? :D

Actually my phone is not rooted. It is SIM unlocked though. None of the Milestones work on the Macs. If you recall I posted that earlier in this thread from the Android boards. There is something different with your phone and mine. Wish I knew what it was. My phone is not even an engineering special. It is a regualr ole Milestone that would have been sold to Telus in Canada.

Thre's an idea.

Seriously would love to do some side to side comparisons. Grant has a Droid, I wonder if his will mount on the Mac? .

Me too....let's make it happen.

Actually, Thomas Hawk's phone is not rooted. From the original article:

You can do something called “rooting” your phone, which as I understand it is like jailbreaking an iPhone, and then use developer tools to take screenshots, but this is not something that I want to do and not something that would appear easy for an every day casual user to do.

A handful of people have said that USB Mass Storage mode needs to be turned on. Some others mention something called Charge Only mode, and yet others, as mentioned above, had to turn on USB debugging. Weird.

Thomas Hawk is lying then. The only way his SD card is showing two partitions is if he rooted his phone, or he partitioned it on a computer previously.

There's only one way, besides USB debugging which is supposed to be completely separate, to mound the SD card, and that is to choose the notification rolldown and tap "Mount SD Card."

This is bizarre.
