Not at this time I believe. Also no way to upgrade memory with something like an SD card and no USB interface. However the Mac-aniacs will be along to remind us that despite all of this it is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The iPad, to my knowledge, has no ability to be connected to anything other than the Internet via AT&T wireless. It has no user-accessible NIC, no USB, no WiFi, no nada. It is designed to do whatever it does out of the box, and that's it.

I've never been one to badmouth Mac or Mac users. I personally don't care much for the Mac user experience, and I can get a virus-resistant OS for free; so there go the two main Mac selling points, for me, personally. As for others, hey, if you love Macs, more power to you. They're fine computers. I just don't happen to care for them.

But this iPad thing... I honestly can't think of any reason I'd buy one, nor even take one for free if one were offered to me. It's probably the first tech device to be introduced in years that I can't think of a single reason to buy. To do what? To be locked into an AT&T contract for as long as you want the device to do what little it can do?

I really don't get it.

Rich, pretty much with you. They do seem to work well for plates, or so I hear.

I suspect that the second generation (first non-beta?) will have some of these issues sorted...

Both the base iPad and the iPad 3G support 802.11a/b/g/n. You don't need an AT&T data plan provided you can get wireless internet.

I have some ideas swirling around in my head for aviation iPad apps...but...given the small market and lack of time in general they'll probably never be written (by me at least)

I might pick one up eventually but am in no rush. Maybe next year.

Yep, in simple terms it has WiFi and can connect that way. At some of meeting last week a few people were using them for note taking and email instead of dragging a laptop around. I want to get the printing situation all worked out before I buy one for use as an EFB.

I like the idea of having all of the plates on a device, but I want to also have paper copies of the prime ones I will need with me in case the electrical device does not work at a critical time. Later this year I am going to play with the apps that allow printing on my iTouches to see which one works best. If I like how that functions I'll buy one of these iPads. Until then I have no over whelming need for one.
