The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
The advice given in my other iPad Mini thread and my patience to not purchase one right away might be rewarded soon.

Apple has officially announced a 22 October event in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Centre at 10am PDT (6pm BST).

The invite's tagline "we still have a lot to cover" suggests that Apple will touch on multiple products at the event.

Coming almost exactly a year after it last refreshed its iPad line and introduced the iPad mini, the new models are expected to have a slimmer and lighter design than the current generation. The 9.7in iPad is expected to get a thinner body and bezels, to match the design of the iPad mini. It is also expected to run Apple's new 64-bit A7 chip, and could include Apple's Touch ID fingerprint sensor introduced in the iPhone 5S in September.

The iPad mini is also expected to be updated with a higher-resolution display - although there are mixed reports about whether it will move to a "retina" display.

Even before the sale date had formally been announced, the retailer John Lewis forecast last Wednesday that the iPad mini will be its best-selling technology device this Christmas. It reckons it will outpace Microsoft's Xbox One for sales. But it forecast that Samsung's Tab 3 tablet and Google's Nexus 7 will be the third and fourth best-selling.

If you want one ASAP, Apple usually has pre-orders available on their website soon after an announcement. Just put in your order and they'll even ship it so it's at your doorstep on the release date(assuming there are enough available still).

I don't know why people do the camping out in lines thing.

If they would put a phone in it, it would smoke the Note and S4 phones. I am wanting a bigger phone screen and the mini would be nice. I have the IPhone 4S.
 
My corporate contact at Mac Mall called me today. I asked about it and he thinks they will make an announcement. If so, they will be taking pre-orders.
 
My mom and I got iPads a few months ago. She got a full-sized with the Retina, and I got a mini. Some people said I should wait for the improved resolution mini.

I personally find the display to be just fine. Are there better displays out there? Of course. But it is still a very nice screen, especially when you consider that most of what I do with it is look at approach plates.

There are a number of voice apps out there. I've been thinking about the possibilities of running an Asterisk server and just using a SIP client for voice. I'm not sure that the iPad mini is really small enough to carry around everywhere, but many of these Android "phablets" aren't much better.

I purchased my first iPhone last week, and although it's a really nice phone and the portability is outstanding, it's nowhere near as practical as the LTE-enabled iPad for productivity. I'm still trying to determine whether it's worth keeping over my old flip phone, especially given AT&T's outrageous monthly fees to use it.

I do, too. I was fine with it, but I could tell that foreflight was getting sluggish on it, taking a few seconds to switch between screens. A friend bought me a mini for letting him use my plane for his IR. I can see a huge difference between them.

I bought my daughter a macbook pro for Christmas for college. I ended up getting the 15" with the retina. I was at the apple store and looked and looked and looked, but I cannot see a difference b/t retina and non-retina. Maybe it's my eyes, but it's not like the non-retina screen is a turd. I felt like I was wasting money getting her the retina, but I was already spending a ton of money and didn't want to kick myself later.
 
I'm still on the iPad 1.

My leap to the mini2 will be partially for retina screen, but mostly cause the iPad1 is getting sluggish. I'll appreciate the small size.

Big things in WingXPro7...

I cannot use "Track Up" - my preferred orientation.

I cannot select options concerning weather on the map view.

May be some other limitations as well.

I currently use my wife's "2" on cross countries with her, or sometimes even my iPhone, for that reason.

Anyway, this will only become more of a limitation going forward.

agreed. foreflight actually announced that they were no longer doing software updates for ipad1. (they are still updating GPS data)
 
MacBreak Weekly this week has a lot of speculation on next Tuesday's announcements. Leo is voting against a retina iPad mini. Others are speculating on colors, a la the iPhone 5c.

The invitation, as usual, attempts to provide obscure hints:

put a phone in an ipad mini - use it BT only - with a headset of some type - with integration into the latest BT standards [which Apple seems to take forever to implement] - would it not be nice to have a text or email display on your car nav system, and then have a dedicated siri button - and then using the BT headset speak:

That's pretty much the way that Siri works with the iPhone today. In my car, Siri will connect and speak through the car audio system, though the "button" is on the phone and not the car.

If a mini had a phone integrated it would probably be an instant purchase for me and replace my iphone and ipad 3.

need a dedicated siri button - either on the headset you use or on the dashboard / steering wheel - a programmable button would work -

Well, the button is on the phone, which isn't really a big deal in most cases, especially if you can unlock the phone with you fingerprint. However, I believe that a whole host of automakers are moving forward with Siri integration, so I'd expect an in-car button to be a part of those implementations.
