Pre-takeoff checklist
At what altitude does cellular (generally) stop functioning? I'm sure it varies by area, but is it like 6,000 AGL?
In my area, I’ve gotten cellular coverage around 3-4K AGL. I’ve had my phone ring from phone calls around 3k ft AGL (1). above that it’s spotty, sometimes I can still send a simple Text message (SMS) as high as 8k or 9k if I’m lucky.
Do not count on any actual data service at any altitude, though, that requires a robust signal strength.
One reason people recommend the Cellular models is having the built-in GPS receiver on iPad cellular models (don’t need a sim card or service, just need that hardware) But in my case I’m always feeding-off of my GDL receiver for GPS, or using my iPhone tethering for data, so I’m fine just using WiFi only tablet.
Signal coverage at altitude Depends on alot of factors, coverage of the area, configuration of your pane (metal structure blocks signal). My fiberglass glider can get cell signal up higher since the signals not blocked from below.
(1): but seriously, avoid distractions when you are flying, put it on do-not-disturb mode.
