iPad Knee-board or Mount

I bought a used iPad Mini and now i am debating weather to buy a knee-board or a yoke mount. Few of my pilot friends use the mount but are not very happy since it blocks some of the gauges.

What do you guys use and recommend?

Walmart soft Belkin case with a elastic band stiched onto the front cover so you can slide a small legal pad on there, just put that in your lap and you're set.

No need to strap, bolt, glue, screw or suction cup the thing.
 
I just sit it on my lap. That works well enough. I'd probably do a yoke mount if I had a mini.
 
Many people are fine just sitting it in their lap or using their non-aviation holder. If you want to look at some options for aviation look at the iPro Aviator/M kneeboard or iPro Navigator yoke mount at www.ForPilotsOnly.com.
 
I've used an "X" mount on the yoke, on Cessna 172, 182 and Piper PA28. In the Cessnas, you need to offset it to avoid covering the tach (and DG), but it works. On the Pipers, it can go UNDER the yoke.

Honestly, though, it's not as convenient as one might think. Paper approach charts are a LOT easier to read, and putting the iPad on the yoke means you can't use it for other things. Same deal with putting it on your leg. IFR, you simply have to be able to write stuff.
 
I use a mount on windscreen,helps keep everything in the scan .mount sits down from windscreen near panel,off to the side.
 
About 18"X2" Pile, two 2"x4" pieces of velcro loop, one of them stuck to the back of your iPad case.

-wrap the 18" pile around the yoke to that it forms an X across the front of the control yoke, secure with the other of the 4" pieces of loop. Slap your iPad mini on the yoke and your done!
 
Ram mount on the side window with the rotating iPad mount, that way I can put it wherever I want and move it out of the way if needed.

Just remember if you go the suction cup route, keep it OFF YOUR WINDSHIELD! The sun will heat the rubber up on the cup and warp your plexiglass windshield.

I find it helps to have a magnetically attached cover flipped open so there is extra friction on the back to help keep it in place on the leg. I've also used a knee mount.

I recently bought an iPad mini and my old knee mount for an iPad 2 wont work with it. So I ordered this, which just arrived in the mail today:

Good lord- it is simple yet effective. Actually works with my old iPad 2, iPad Mini, and iPhone 4 (the last just barely in portrait orientation). A big improvement over the old Otterbox I used to use for the iPad 2.
 
I like having the iPad mini mounted on the yoke in my Mooney. In landscape orientation, it fits beautifully in the yoke and doesn't hide or block anything.

I agree except I do keep mine longways. It clips just a small part of the panel but doesn't cover anything from my view except the switches at the bottom. Mounting it on the yoke has been a huge improvement vs keeping it on my knee.

That's what I bought. Can't believe I paid thirty four bucks for an elastic strap with two clips on it but the thing works. I fly a Champ so space is limited and I have to use a kneeboard because of the stick. When maneuvering I can just turn it to the side of my leg where it's secure and out of the way.

I've been using the iPad Mini in the cockpit of my Mooney for about a year and a half. And being a bit of a gadget geek, I've tried several solutions looking for the best one. The solution I've settled on is this iPad holder...

It has a clipboard cover that allows for a writing pad and also keeps the iPad in the shade. With this setup I've never had it overheat.

I use this with a RAM yoke mount.

I also have the cover flipped over as well. I'd really like to put it on the panel, but there just isn't a good place for it in the Arrow. Putting it on the far right side is less visible than on the lap.

depends on what you fly. when I fly the Cessna Skycatcher or Remos LSA I use a kneeboard for my iPad mini. when I'm in the Skyhawk I use a yoke mount.
 
A mini will fit most anywhere. Yoke mounts are okay and I use them in cessna,s on longer flights. I fly a piper though mostly on long trips and find its pretty much just as easy to set on my knee. I do strap on a kneeboard maybe half the time to take notes and that holds it pretty steady on my knee. I have a really good case so when it falls on the floor it doesn't hurt anything. I tend to set it on floor beside me most of the time. I do use it for plate reference, but I only need few things off plate so really don't need to have in front of me at all times.
 
When I got my IPad several years ago, I began searching tediously for the right mount. In the middle of this search I was invited to fly with a friend. He set his IPad in his lap and said it worked great for him. I tried it and never looked back. I hooked a strap to it to ensure that it never falls off and jams under the rudder pedals or something, but it just sets on my lap and it works great.
 
Hi. I fly (actually, rent$$$) a C172SP/G1000. I've been debating side window forward of the door post v. yoke mount and after thousands of years of research, finally came to the conclusion of iPAD Air, Portrait Mode and this mount:

It's an extra $20 if you have your iPAD in a case as the dude you makes them individually (Allan) needs to buy an expanding/contracting holder from RAM that fits around the thicker case material housing the iPAD Air. I bought mine yesterday and think it will work out just fine.

Pricey, but I want to minimize my head movements in IMC and with a yoke mount all my stuff is in front of me. That's it.:yes:
 
Yoke Mount... only way to go on my Cherokee.. believe me I have tried to like it everywhere else..
 
I've been using RAM Mounts since I started putting the iPad in the aircraft. I started with iPad 1/2, went to mini 2, and back to the bigger air 2. I used my iPad as a laptop replacement, plus the air2's screen size makes for easy chart reading.

In the pipers and Cessna I use a yoke mount. Our BE33 has a RAM ball mount in the center of the dual yoke. When I feel like it I mount it on the side window. Having flexibility and keeping myself free of things laying on my lap is great.
 
I use a Ram yoke mount for my iPad mini in a 1981 172RG, and it works perfectly. I'm tall so I can see all the gauges, but that's also what makes a knee mount difficult.
