1. Did the procedure to install IOS 7.1 to the Ipad.

2. After processing the update download file, the screen went blank and it went in to "Waiting for Ipad" mode, and finally timed out after several minutes.

3. No amount of pressing and holding the buttons will do anything. Won't respond to being plugged in to the computer, or directly in to the wall. ITunes can't find it.

Any ideas?

Apple Store nearby?

The Genius Bar should be able to take care of it. Appointment needed.

No charge and warranty status generally not important.

That's my next step I guess.

Well guess what. I went to the Apple store, and no amount of diagnostics or tools would wake it up, nor would leaving it plugged in overnight. It was out of warranty, so I sprung for a new 3.

I was thinking about using Apple's buyback program to dispose of the bricked 2, but didn't because after answering a few online questions they valued it at zero, plus it was still in a state where personal information could presumably be retrieved from it. So I just tossed it in a box in the corner of my office and forgot about it.

Well just for ****s and giggles, I decided to plug it back in again and just leave it as one last attempt before popping the case open so I could smash the chipset. Twenty minutes later, it came back to life! Which means I wasted a lot of money on a new one, however, at least this one now has some value and use. I don't really need a third, so I'll probably just sell it or give it to a family member once I restore it clean.

I don't know about you but I'd be on Apple's case for an update that went sideways. IMO that's not at all the same thing as having one die on its own.

I guess this is one of those "good things come to those who wait" things. :D

JOOC, how much would they have allowed on a trade-up if it was working at the time? Given the recency of the sale, Apple might apply that retroactively.

Probably worth more on Craigslist than what they'd give. Think of it as found money!

I was on Apple's case. But I may have spoke too soon. It auto died again during the software download.

Apple used to have a one month return policy, though it may have recently shrunk to 2 weeks.

Is that an option?

Probably but if I do revive it I'll sell it or use it for something else. I do like the 3 better.

Well well well, looks like I'm back in business. It popped back to life and the recovery took.

How do I completely disassociate it with my Apple ID?

Incineration is probably good although crushing should also work.

Nononono it's operational now. I want to either sell it or give it to someone.

Rhetorical question. I figured it out. Sign in to Icloud, find it then "remove from account."

You should probably go to Settings->General->Reset and nuke the thing, then you can give it away with no personal info on it...

Does personal information reside after a restore? I assumed it would have been wiped in the restore and update, prior to setup as a "restore from backup."

Ah, sounds like you may already done it. I got the "update" part but I thought you had just done an in-place update.

Yeah it's currently in a state where you have a setup screen and I've already removed it from my account, so it has to be set up as a new device.
