Hilton Goldstein, CEO of Hilton Software and the developer of WingX Pro7™, shared with MyGoFlight.com the details of what is being released to Apple in their 4.4 version by the end of 2010. He went on to share what he hopes will come in the next release in early 2011 which is always subject to change.

Ok. Equal time for WingX pro after all the Foreflight threads ;)

So I Installed it on the iPad 2 last night and signed up for the trial period. Interested in comparing it to Foreflight.

First impressions: hate the data download scheme compared to Foreflight. Much less customization of which data you want to download. Perhaps people with >1Mps connections don't care but I like choosing which sectionals or charts to download instead of having to download or update an entire region of the country on my 512K connection at home. Also, if you switch to another application while downloading databases it doesn't seem to pause and then resume like Foreflight (or just about any other in-app data download) but rather it must start over. Frustrating. Maybe that is a problem only on the first time database acquisition? Don't know.

A little buggy, experienced a couple of crashes over about 90 minutes of futzing around with it.

I think I am really going to like the split screen with two independent windows which can be customized. For in-flight use I really think that really makes sense.

Terrain database is the next big thing I wish Foreflight would implement and Hilton rightfully pushes this as one of the major features over Foreflight.

One more thing so far: there doesn't appear to be any functionality for moving map sectionals unless you have downloaded them in advance? If you have connectivity, Foreflight will continue to daisy chain sectionals for you if you haven't downloaded and cached them. WingX doesnt appear to? Maybe I'm missing something?

More after I finally get the databases to load...I'll post some screenshots of what I'm talking about above too.

Finally got the databases to load by moving to a 2Mbs Wifi connection  Kept timing out at home. That blows.

Found out the terrain database ends at 60 degrees of latitude. So much for most of Alaska :rolleyes:

Hmmm...Foreflight winning hands down so far.

Update for WingX 7 Pro (v. 5.2) adds some new features including better database download features and flight plan rubber banding. Also scratch pad in split screen with moving map. That is nice!

I played with the new version on the ground for some time. Looks really nice. Hopefully will take it for a spin in the plane over weekend. The only feature I'm really missing is option north up/heads up. I beliece they have very strong reason to not enable this feature. I just don't know what the reason is. Otherwise it is hard to explain why both WingX and FF do not introduce this feature. So far only SkyCharts Pro has it. Anyway, good job Hilton Software!

I know on iPhones and iPads when using a car GPS app and selecting track up many times the device gets confused. You get a warning that pops up and talks about interference and tells you to move the device in a figure eight pattern. Could be the reason they don't do it.

I bet it is. I just send out today enhancement request to add something like 3 fingers map turning. I believe the pilot knows where he is heading and being able to put the map that way will help a lot.

That is because that is heading up. Ive never seen a portable gps of any make that displays heading up, as a gps itself has no clue what it's heading is.

Most portable gps systems will display either course up, track up, or north up. There is no reason the dame couldn't be done on the iPad as the system has reliable figures for all of that. The problem is all the text on the maps would be sideways or upside down and I suspect that is something they just donte want to do.

Is anyone actually flying with one? Was wondering what gps receiver you'd recommend. Thanks for any advice.

I'm flying with WingX and use internal GPS. With RAM yoke mount works perfectly fine in C172. Same in C182 but I used it only for one hour during checkout. What iPad model do you have?

I bought a 32GB wifi-only iPad last week, a Bluetooth XGPS150, and WingX. I've been too busy to fly with them yet (maybe this weekend) but on the ground it looks to be great combination. The GPS fits nicely into a supplied cradle that has a nice big sticky rubber mat that I suspect will keep it in one place on the dash (rented 172.) I bought it under the impression it did not support WAAS. However on the company's forum it is claimed that it supports WAAS. (http://xgps150.dualav.com) If so, so much better.

I much prefer the idea of a separate GPS unit that I can place where it has a chance to maintain good reception.

I have an ipad2 but need an external gps. Glad to hear The good reports

Quite a few of us are, but mostly with ForeFlight instead of WingX. Do a search on "ForeFlight" and check those threads out, there's been a lot of discussion about the GPS options. My impression is that most use the internal GPS on the 3G models.
