This is pretty awesome!

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

Not saying its not real, but it sure looks photoshopped....

Yeah, that flag doesn't look right.

Don't mean to impugn the larger importance of the ship at all... Just struck my nerd nerve too.

Yep, definitely real. I vaguely recall a plan for this some years back but had not heard anything until I read that bit today.

Here's some more on it...

Probably the original source I read years ago:
http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=5340

From Wikipedia with an interesting tidbit of information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_New_York_(LPD-21)

Coincidentally, a previous holder of the name, USS New York (BB-34), had its keel laid on September 11, 1911, exactly 90 years to the day before the WTC was attacked.

This article has some amazing quotes from workers who considered it an honor to be a part of her construction:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article723328.ece

Some shipworkers say the hairs stood up on the backs of their necks the first time they touched it. Others have postponed their retirement so they can be part of the project.

One worker, Tony Quaglino, said: “I was going to go in October 2004 after 40 years here, but I put it off when I found out I could be working on New York. This is sacred and it makes me very proud.” Glen Clement, a paint superintendent, said: “Nobody passes by that bow section without knocking on it. Everybody knows what it is made from and what it’s about.”

Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying the entire picture is photoshopped. Just the flag. I don't have a point other than the geekery of it, either. :dunno:

The picture can still be a rendering and may well be. Considering it was christened only this last March, it's probably still in dry dock or still tied at dock if launched. Commissioning is not for another year so it has a shakedown cruise to undergo well before that time. The initial crew will mostly be boarded along with the civilian support teams. It will be as if she were a civilian ship during that time. That will be the first opportunity for a photo at sea with an American flag hoisted on its mast.

Here's one more site:

Additionally, there will be sister ships USS Arlington named in honor of the losses at the Pentagon and USS Somerset in honor of the Flight 93 passengers who prevented further attack.

If folks would actually READ the entire article...

The picture is NOT of the USS New York - It's of another ship of the same class, the USS San Antonio. And they did have a big-@$$ flag on it:

Without those 5" guns fore and aft, it just doesn't look like a destroyer.

A Destroyer is a DDG. Current US Navy DDGS are the Arliegh Burke (DDG-51) class.

It's good to see that steel re-used. I was there when the steelworkers showed up and the Fire Department went from rescue to recovery mode.

We helped lay hundreds of 8x8x20 beams by hand for use as shoring for the huge cranes that came in and sorted through the mess.

This is not a DDG, An LPD is a landing deployment craft, which carries two hover type assault transports that are sea deployable, multiple helos, etc.

This is a low radar profile five versions improve version of the old LST. It's gonna be punishing in the open seas- the design is not a deep draft, though this vessel is not designed to go ashore, but to stand off 40-50nm.

This craft is strictly for carrying the attack to the beach.

Somehow, while reading through the thread, I got the idea that the first post called it a destroyer. I see now that it didn't. I was going down through the posts thinking "I know I've been out of the Navy along time. They sure have change the destroyer type design". I just assumed missiles had replaced guns and maybe panels opened up somewhere to expose launchers. I've been out 42 years.
