Interesting Story on FlightAware

Wow..... Thanks for the link..

I have always wondered if it was possible and apparently it is..

Ben.

Unbelievable, he took over a year and untold efforts to collect data, and convince the FAA, when he could have had the wings off, and on a trailer, safely at the shop in less than a day!
"I bought another 175 for these tests"

I thought I was stubborn, I got nothing on this dude!

Bob definitely likes to do things just to prove that they can be done.

I just had to shake my head and mutter "idiot" to myself when I read the story. 15 months? What a tool.

Bob is definitely not an idiot or a tool. He is an ornery stubborn old fart though

He is both for dragging something out for 15 months that could have been taken care of in a week. That's just stupidity at it's finest.

I love it. Two guys who said, "I think I can" and then did.

Bah. I think it's freakin' cool. First off, that someone is stubborn enough to get it done, and second, that he's proven to the FAA that they're not always the kings of right. Now, that FSDO has had their eyes opened a little bit, and will hopefully be somewhat more flexible and accommodating in the future.

that is so arkansas...

If you've dealt with the FAA much then you will figure out that they are the kings of I don't want my signature on your approval. They could really care less what you do as long as you don't cause them to have to do too much work or put themselves on the line to have to testify in court why they approved you to do something dangerous.

I've had my share of "I'm going to do it MY way" projects, against all logic (as defined by time and money) so I understand and appreciate Bob.
However as I get older, I realize I only have available so much in the way of resources. Life is full of choices. Do I really want to spend $$$ when I can get the same result for $? I only have so many years left on this earth, do I want to spend the next year doing ___? Even when my personal or original thought was to do it the more expensive or time-consuming method?

Whatever floats each of our respective boats!

I sure wouldn't have done it, but sure have the upmost respect for the fella that did.

Best,

Dave

Fixed that for you
