Apparently the FAA has developed an interactive PHAK app for the iPad, $5.99.

I had heard of it but did not know the FAA made it. Any idea how interactive it actually is? Like videos or just arrows pointing to something?

I have no idea, it was in my Facebook feed and clicked on it but didn't download. You can look on the App Store, that's where the FB link led.

I just downloaded a pdf of it to my iPhone and have been reading it that way. I'm not sure what they could do with it to make it better without turning it into an online ground school type program. Talk about information overload though!

From the sounds of it that is what they have done.

Looks like they made an interactive Instrument Flying Handbook as well.
Instrument Flying Handbook by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

For the IFH, if you follow Henning's link and expand the information section, it says

Publisher: Cho-Lin Yang
Seller: WEN HSIN TAO

Contrast that with the fact that it says "Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)" in the title.

Assuming that it wasn't officially published by the FAA, or at least blessed by them, it kind of ****es me off that the description of that interactive IFH says "This handbook supersedes FAA-H-8081-15A, Instrument Flying Handbook, dated 2007."

It looks likely, in my opinion, that they're falsely implying that it's an official FAA publication with that "supersedes" crap...

You can install a free sample into the iBooks App on your iPad. Nothing amazing. The sample included a video about airspace (felt like a commercial about how awesome the FAA is), and the same static illustrations that you get in the standard PDF version, but that expand and contract like any other iBook.

I'll stick with my free PDF version. I broke it up into separate chapter files for easy, bite size consumption. And, I can fully annotate them with PDF Expert (or GoodReader if that's your preference) on the iPad, or in Adobe Acrobat on a PC and a bigger screen when desired, and they automatically sync between my iPad and desktops using DropBox. It's studying nirvana.

Guys, I found the same thing on my adroid marketplace. In the author spot, it shows "FAA". Out of curiosity, I searched for "Federal Aviation administration" and got the exact same search results, but free PDFs.....just FYI.

It looks like whoever is "FAA" is trying to make a buck or two ;)
