Howdy! I'm a recent PPL and am looking for anyone's experiences about inexpensive plane rental in the Dallas area. I did some searches but whatever I found is quite out of date. Almost everything seems to start at $125-$150/hour wet, quite a bit more than what I was paying another city where I earned my certificate.

Looking for a cheap ASEL in the area. The closer to downtown Dallas the better, but I can't be too picky it seems.

What I've found so far:

  • Rockwall FliteCenter (F46): Cessna 172N or Cessna 172P, $125/hr wet
  • Slipstream Aviation (RBD): Grumman Cheetah, $145/hr wet
  • US Sport Aircraft (ADS): Pipersport Sportcruiser, $115/hr wet (only a 2-seat LSA, though)

I would welcome any suggestions or comments about your experiences at these or any other local FBOs with rentals, including any policies about cross countries, instructor checkout requirements, and so on.

Thanks!

For rentals to "joe pilot", you've found the basic market for not being part of a club.

To get a slightly better deal, you will need to become part of a flying club. In exchange for a modest buy-in, and a reasonable monthly dues, you will be given access to a group owned aircraft at a decent rate.

Spike Cutler can tell you more about RFC Dallas based at KADS. They have a Cherokee 180 available at $95/hr.

There are two clubs based at McKinney (KTKI), Texins and North Texas Flying Club

At 52F, Aerovalley Flying Club offers at 172M and a Cherokee 235.

At Denton, KDTO, I am part of Metro Flyers (www.metroflyingclub.com) that offers a C182P for $110/hr on tach wet, and a Bonanza V35 for $130/hr tach wet. We are an equity club of 16 members (only 7 are really flying a lot) and have one slot remaining.

A buddy in that club and I are working to form Denton Flying Club. We are still scouting 4-seat aircraft in the 160-180hp range, and have talked too an owner of a DA20. But once we find something, we'll start taking on members and offering the aircraft in the $110-115/hr wet hobbs range.

Welcome to PoA!!! PM me your contact information so if there is a local get to gether, you're informed about it.
