I would hardly consider it an April 1st joke - If you didn't know earlier, it is pretty obvious by the time they start interviewing the B-17 gunner that it was done tongue in cheek. Kind of like the whole 'Front fell off' routine.
Something about a VW bug sliding across the windscreen of the B-17 made me laugh....

That was quite obvious. Even if the gunner didn't give it away, the shots of the beetles at around 2:20 did. Those were 1970s vintage beetles, not 40s.
