Maybe you missed...I said I flew a bunch of IFR in that bird in training. That would be in VFR conditions, with a safety pilot (my instructor). The only approach I could legally fly in that plane in IMC was a VOR approach.

I didn't know if you meant actual or hood time... at any rate, that question is answered.
As for your second point...LOL! I think that's true for most newbie instrument students, in any kind of plane. But you may have been better off in that plane, for the reason you pointed out regarding the "time-until-trouble" factor. I've heard similar feedback on flying Cessna 140s on approaches: it may deviate more, but you have loads of time to get it back on track.
