I, too, love that finished result.

However I also know that the bit about making those things really sucks. I've had to make a couple of rock gardens before... In the summer... In Texas.

What's neat about my project is that I have a large pile of rocks which is left over from tons of ledge having been blasted out of this hill as long as 30 years ago. Those are the unused pieces from when others were placed into the landscaping when the house was built in 1997. The contractor who'll pave my driveway after the wall is finished told me that the pile of rocks(and others lying about) "is worth thousands of dollars if you had to have them brought in from the outside to do a stone wall."

I'm amazed. From soft ball size to front-loader requirement, I'm not even 1/2 way through the pile. And when I rake decades of leaves away from the circumference of the pile I find more that have sunk into the surface. Project should be finished by August 15.

I wish I had that many rocks that were around here, I would do the same for my house. I've got a big sloped area that I wanted to terrace. Another suggestion I liked for terracing it was railroad ties, if I can find them.

Ted:

A few more added to the wall. I've only used less than half of the available stuff in the pile; but a lot of the remainder are too large for this particular project. I want to get it done so the paving company can finish their job on the driveway and can pave right up to the wall.

EDIT: The old building at upper right used to be the Bay Point Fire Station and was about 4sm from where it now sits. About 30-35 years ago, when its use was phased out, the fellow who bought this property(and did the original ledge blasting) had it moved to where it sits. There's no door on the upper end(was a 1-truck station) and it's long, wide, and high enough to back the boat and trailer(other thread "Boaters Attention") into for winter storage. It's been there 20-25 years before my house was built(1997).
