I am gonna buy an iPad this week.

Is it possible to buy the 3G one without having to get an ATT subscription? I already have ATT with a data plan and would just move that SIM into the iPad when I need that type of connectivity.
 
Rich is right about the sim. If you're going to use it for aviation you download everything at home as far as charts, procedures, etc. ForeFlightHD is the best of the bunch that I've found. The app is free, subscription is $24.95 for 3 months if you just want to try it or $74.95 for a year. Another one to try is iHud. For iHud To work well you would want the iPad mounted somewhere stable. The flying I've done with it so far has been with it strapped to my leg like a kneeboard. That has worked well in a 172, not sure about other types. Another app that is available is Wingx. I have not tried it. I also have SkychartsPro and NexradHD as well as Skyradar. Skyradar is an iPhone app that will run on the iPad.
 
You can get an iPad with WiFi but without 3G, or buy it with 3G but not start a subscription. Foreflight works great- it has all current sectionals, low and high altitude charts, and highly readable approach plates. You can also download weather maps, etc. Mine does not get a GPS signal in the air, but I did not want to place it on the glare shield due to concerns about heat. I no longer bring a notebook computer for travel- the iPad has it all.
 
I wouldn't know what to do with an Ipad. I like the mattress I have now.:wink2:

The best mattress I ever slept on was left by a previous tenant in an apartment I rented about six or seven years ago. After schlepping all my stuff up three flights of stairs (with help, of course), I collapsed on it briefly because "my" bed still wasn't assembled.

And I fell in love.

It was exactly right -- everything I could ask for in a mattress. So I hired a professional mattress sanitizing company to sanitize it, and I use it to this day. Or night, as it were.

Check with the iPimp (Kent). He'll be able to tell you everything you need to know. I'm not entirely convinced that he isn't actually Steve Jobs, and that other guy is someone they trot out on stage to cover Kent's true identity.

I really like our "Sleep Number" mattress... (I bought the lowest price version (no surprise there, eh?) without the memory foam.)
 
I'm thinking that the next gen iPad will have the solid state gyros in it that the new iPhone has. I'm waiting for that one...

Hmmmm.... :idea:

Now if only someone would actually use those for one of those attitude indicator apps, we might get an actual useable cheap backup-ish thing. Not that I'd completely trust it, but...

Yes, you can buy one without a subscription. You can also turn the subscription on and off at will, as necessary.

Is your sim a MicroSIM? You'll need that at least, and I'm not sure if non-Apple MicroSIMs will work (you couldn't use a non-iPhone sim in an iPhone, still might not be able to). I haven't heard anyone saying that the iPad sim is iPad-specific though.

Did you get the iPad? Did your sim swap work?

I have not gotten yet. I got a little busy and did not get to the Apple store yet. I also am thinking of getting another toy and am re-questioning the idea of the iPad.

As for the SIM. It is my understanding that all one needs is a little razor blade trimming and the standard SIM will fit into the iPad.

You know after ten years a mattress gains 10-20 pounds of dead skin within it. Doesnt matter what you do, it cant get out without replacing hte mattress all together. Sleep well ;)

I gave her a few off the top of my head (two million mites in an average mattress, mattress doubling in weight, etc.) that I read over the years. She asked me if any of these statistics have any scientific merit and I told her that none of them are in the literature. To the layman that is NO! In fact I asked the Wall Street Journal writer to call an expert on mattresses at the internal sleep products association. She did and was told that the statistic on mattresses doubling in weight was far from the truth. The journalist choose to include it in the story anyway. She liked the statistic because it made her story more interesting.

Glad to set the record straight, Emmett. As a bit of practical advice, when dealing with journalists it is never wise to speak in terms that may go over a layman's head, e.g., that certain statements "aren't in the literature." Express yourself unambiguously, by stating politely that this is the kind of TOTAL CRAP found only in stories written by COMPLETE MORONS who ought to be working for SUPERMARKET TABLOIDS. She may still get it wrong, but hey, you tried.

That sort of thing, yes... So far, they all use the accelerometer which is fine when you're on the ground, but will always show you straight and level in the air as long as your turns are properly coordinated. Using the new gyros in the iPhone 4 would be very interesting...

I've been thinking -- painful as it is -- about buying an iPad; but I weakened. Something more tuned to my daily activities won out as the newest toy by Carl Zeiss. But the expense was about equal to the cost of an iPad and a subscription(or two). But for 24 months and 0.0% interest there remain other open avenues. I like working on others' money. And now, awaiting FedEx.
