I'll have a warrant in about 12 hours

I got pulled over in Nebraska for doing 4 over (69 in a 65 zone- speed agreed with the GPS track). I had NJ plates at the time. I was polite & contrite (and didn't have drugs in the car), so I was let off with a warning and a lecture.

The first ticket I ever got was for 73 in a 70 on a freeway in Ohio. I lived in Michigan at the time and had Michigan plates. The same week I got pulled over on a rural highway at night doing what I thought was the speed unposted limit at night (55 like it was in Michigan at the time) but Ohio's unposted limit at night is 50. This was before credit cards and Ohio required payment on the spot if you were from out of state. That meant backtracking 30 miles to the county courthouse because the cop couldn't take cash and checks weren't acceptable either. I had a AAA "bail bond" card when I came into Ohio but the first cop took that on the 3 over beef.

My first ticket was doing 60 in a 55 on I-90/94 in downtown Chicago at about 1AM in the mid 80's. I was in college at the time and couldn't afford it, so I went downtown to fight it. I showed up; my name, along with about 5 others, was called; and the judge said "you were all less than 10(?) mph over and were respectful to the officer. Dismissed."

My first ticket came going 110 in a 55. I was driving on the reservation, had heard that there was no speed limit on the reservation. I didn't see any speed limit signs, so I gunned it. Passed a cop, and was immediately pulled over.....right in front of (at the time) the only 55MPH speed limit sign on that road. I had to do Driver Improvement school to keep from losing my license.

I was 16.

And its official, I have warrants:

I'm not sure why they have my speeding listed at 16-20 over....that's not what my ticket says.

My first stack consisted of Excessive display of speed, Excessive display of accelleration, Excessive noise due to squeeling of tires, Excessive noise due to defective exhaust, Non compliant tires (no DOT stamp), Insufficent bumber clearance, No windshield wipers, No lights, and Speeding 152 in a 35 (in an indutrial park at night). There were 3 more because I remember it being an even dozen, but I don't remember what they were.

Nick, if you show up in court, odds are you are going to be arrested on the spot. Don't go without a lawyer. Considering the report says something different than what's on the citation, a lawyer is mandatory as this could be the beginning of getting the entire thing dismissed once you show up with documentation... WITH a lawyer.

One time, I failed to show for a hearing in Littleton. By a stroke of "luck", I'd had knee surgery the week before and was on pain meds much of the time. I slept right through the alarm to go to court. I called them and explained the circumstance. Given I showed up with documents indicating recent surgery and my pain meds bottle, I got a break. They did do an arrest but simply a formality without my being in cuffs, etc. I was escorted down to the city lockup, get prints, fill out paperwork and then back up to the court to pay my fine with the FTA charge dismissed. All done in a half hour.

So, I suppose you could have broken a leg immediately after the ticket? :D

First, it appears that they did an annual on you right there!

Second 117 mph OVER the limit!:hairraise:

So - since I'm not in New Mexico, does this make me a fugitive?

Nick,
From my quick google research. In NM, you will need to have that $576 bond WITH you to stay out of jail. It specifically states "cash only" so you can't use a bail bondsman.
I would suggest as other's have that you get an attorney and let them do their job.

Nick-

How much would one of us get if we dragged you in with your lawyer? Is there any bounty we can collect? :)

Hey - I think I saw Dog the Bounty Hunter coming thru DIA yesterday ...

Look for Marshall Sam Garrard to show up at your door!

Not the old Sam. The new Sam!

I had just picked up Reher & Morrisons old Pro Stock chassis and put an engine I built in it and did a quick test run at about 23:00, there just happenned to be a cop doing his turn through the park when I did it. Wasn't a big deal as I had a lawyer/judge in "my pocket" so to speak, just traded them for some work on his Ferrari.

New update! I called Metro Court today to see exactly what they wanted me to do to proceed. The lady explained that I have 2 choices:

1) Come in, plead guilty and pay on the spot, and I will not go to jail.
2) Come in early some day as a walk in (only valid the week after an FTA), and hope that I am seen. The judge will only see 18 walk ins a day, and its first come first served. If I am not one of the 18, I go to jail. If I am one of the 18, I get seen as if I didn't have an FTA.

So - without having the money, I have to take option 2 and pray that I am one of the 18 that are seen that day. Sigh. Looks like, with only 18 seen a day, its a big gamble, and there's a good chance I'm going to jail.

The PoA staff should start a "Keep Nick out of Jail" Fund.

What a bunch of crap Nick. Sorry you have to deal with this. :(

Sorry Nick, we only laugh because we can. I mean care. Yeah, care.

NICK!!! HIRE A LAWYER! :fcross:

I've hired lawyers for speeding tickets. In Illinois you walk just for having one. In Wisconsin it wasn't quite as easy.

If I go to jail, I'm PCing right away.

I will not be raped or beaten because I'm white and pretty.

LOL!!! You're just a pup:rofl:. Don't worry, jail ain't that bad:D. Quick tip, show up in a wheelchair.:yes::yes: Don't worry, even if they process you in, as soon as it's done, they'll process you right back out. Typically 36-48hrs of no sleep, you can have a good bit of fun though. It's Jail, not Prison. Entirely different things, and most likely you won't make it past processing in your situation. They don't have the space for non violent offenders.

Even the Harley man did some jail time once. In 1964, fresh out of Radio, TV and Theatre school, I was on a solo motorcycle trip into Canada via Calais, Maine/ St. Stephen-New Brunswick, Canada border crossing. I went down into Moncton, NB to visit a theatre school friend. I got the tour through CKCW Radio-TV where he was later to be employed; and we went out to Shediak(sp?) Island which was owned by K. C. Irving(yes, the "man" of Irving Refineries oil and gasoline).

From Pointe du Schoen(sp?), Keith's summer place it was 329 miles to Edmonston, New Brunswick. That's right at the Northern tip of Maine's border town of Madawaska. It was raining for 300 of those miles and the Trans Canada Highway wasn't completed at that time, making for a long and wet, bumpy ride. It was July, height of the tourist season, and hotel rooms were at $150 and up per night.

I put the cash I was carrying -- most of it -- into my socks and went into the police station, they being able to see my Harley carrying simply a sleeping bag. Great people, the Canadians. They put me up in a cell for the night and gave me breakfast in the morning. Then I crossed the border -- only needed simple ID evidence back then -- and headed down "through those ----- Hainesville Woods"(some of you may remember Dick Curless's biggest hit song, "Tombstone Every Mile". It was a great trip, and the only time I've ever stayed in jail.

Hope it works out AOK for you, Nick.

Interesting follow-up to my 44 year old story of my Canada trip. Over in the PoA "Warbirds" thread I posted a couple photos of what had been an RCAF airplane(probably old enough to have been a Warbird). I sent the photos to Keith, in Moncton, New Brunswick, as referenced above; he being a lifelong Canadian. He sent me back the following response:

"Hi Larry.

Nice shots. I actually remember seeing these planes at the airport in Moncton, New Brunswick when I was just a little tyke. They also used similar models for mosquito spraying in the marshes behind my home. Just think ... they used DDT at the time and no one cared if they got a little on themselves. My how times have changed.

Good to hear from you.

Cheers

Keith"

. . . . small world, eh?

Ditto! Unless you can go campout on the judge's doorstep for the next morning to be one of the eighteen and pay, don't go to court without a lawyer.

Still glad you got the bike?

True. It was the rider. But, it was his desire to have the bike that led to continued events. So, it's a valid question. :)
Or it could have been the truck. Really your question isn't very positive and I don't think Nick is looking for a lecture.

I'm thinking that if you show up a couple hours before they open the doors, you might be first in line with a much better chance of being one of the 18 than if you show up later.

Albuquerque Metro Court sucks.

Just before I left Albuquerque, I got pulled over on my motorcycle for going 41 in a 35. I was going from work, down the street to get a pack of cigarettes at the gas station on my motorcycle, and left my backpack (which holds my registration and insurance documents) back at work. When I got pulled over, I was literally right next to work, and could have easily grabbed the documents in less time than it took to write me the tickets. C'est la vie, I was speeding, and I didn't have the proof with me, so I know I deserved the tickets.

<snip>
I'm hardly lecturing. And, I'm saying nothing compared to what many others have said with regard to a lawyer.

A lawyer isn't a good option when you can't even afford any of it. There is something known as 'no money' and when you hit this point it literally means 'no money'. His best bet is to show up way early and be extra friendly.

As far as the motorcycle. It had nothing to do with this. Your question wasn't exactly that friendly. I'm going to leave this at that.

It was a chain of events, starting with wanting a motorcycle and going on to not maintaining the documents required for it. The motorcycle had everything to do with it.

That being said, I think the original reason for stopping him was a joke. The cop would get laughed out of court in most jurisdictions.

Its okay guys. Lawyer is not an option. I will discuss with my supervisor my options at work as far as missing some days when I get back, just in case the worst case scenario pops up. I have vacation time, so I can probably blow a few days if necessary.

Bike or no bike, same thing would have happened. I have found most cops won't pull me over on a bike anyway, so if anything, the bike is good for avoiding trouble. There were two cops, one was really nice, and had he been the one that pulled me over, I would not have been given any citations methinks.

Either way, I'm not fighting anything with the courts, as I was guilty of speeding (as long as they correct the amount of speeding in question, I'm not gonna push for a drop on a technicality, as that drives me insane when people get away with that). The not carrying of my insurance card and the lack of registration paperwork should be dropped, as I was insured and registered, but the law states that I must provide proof at the time of stop, so I understand if that does not get dropped.

I was under the impression that the motorcycle endorsement was optional. My impression was wrong. No fighting there.

Just gotta take my lumps and hope I don't go to jail because of some bureaucratic madness.
