Hi all

Am starting my IR training. I am using King and Gleim. My instructor wants me to read the Jep book for knowledge, not just studying for the test. Would you read the Jep book from start to finish or read in the same order as presented by King or Gleim. Thanks.

Personally I think the Jeppesen book kind of stinks (too much fluff), but a lot of people like it.

Anyway, I think it is fine to study it in whatever order you think is appropriate. If you want to watch a King video, and then read about the same topic in the Jepp book (or vice versa), that will only help you learn and retain the information.

I agree that the Jepp book sucks. It's not a good test prep NOR is it a particularly good book for general IFR knowledge. It won't hurt to read it but I'd be looking at others.

Jepp book may be the best in terms of content but it's just horribly presented. I didn't finish it.

If Jepp doesn't work for you maybe try Machado - read all his stuff.

Ron has a point that you're working with your instructor to master the material so talk with instructor if the Jepp book doesn't work for you.

I read the gleim book then started taking practice tests repeatedly. Last year, most of the instrument test was repeats.

I liked the Jepp online course, it follows the Jepp book without as much fluff in an interactive format http://ww1.jeppesen.com/personal-solutions/aviation/online-training.jsp

Also the ASA prepware software for practice questions, in addition it has a concise study guide that covers most all the material you will find on the knowledge test. http://www.mypilotstore.com/mypilotstore/sep/579

ASA's Prepware is available for the iPad/iPhone and just $9.99. Link to iTunes Store

Good way to practice exam questions while out and about. And, like their FAR/AIM application, pay once, and they keep it constantly updated.

Jeppesen online followed by Shepard Air worked for me. The instrument written is tough!

Keep in mind you may get a helicopter related question in the IR test. I got it and so did one of my friends - I got it wrong because I don't care about helicopters...and no it's not covered in Gleim or King Schools.

Actually, it is covered on one of the "between video" quizzes, but not actually explained by Martha or John.

But like you I was going, "why is this question in a fixed wing exam?"

...and the question is?
