As the two criminals in upstate NY illustrate, there is a downside to 'life without parole'. Society would be much better off had both of them been executed for their crimes many years ago.
One killed a sheriffs deputy by shooting him and running him over with his car. When he wasn't dead enough, he shot him again.
The other one first murdered his boss by breaking his neck as part of a day-long kidnapping and later killed someone while on the run in Mexico. Prior to that he had spent time in prison for a rape and a stabbing.

Both are god knows where right now. I just hope they dont kill anyone else while on the run.

They will. All this demonstrates is the whole third party Law Enforcement Agent and prolonged justice for profit system doesn't work. Since the revolver pistol was invented, Law Enforment Departments have been functionally obsolete. We no longer need 'the strong to guard the weak', give everyone a pistol and training and let society work it out one on one. Eventually society will work its way to one end of the spectrum or the other, a peaceful cooperative society of respect, or a Mad Max style dystopian society. My bet is given the opportunity, it would be the former, and that would be bad for the markets; that's why we want gun control so much. You can't keep an armed society slaves for long.

In Texas? Nah, there's no discrimination in Texas, they'll kill anyone of any color.

Yep. I worked a death penalty trial in Texas a few years back. A white guy and a hispanic guy were given death for killing a black guy.
