Really, its a bug. I need one of you really smart, or nerdy, or bug loving guys/ gals to tell me what it is and if its poisonous.

It bit my son. Hence, its immediate death.

that depends, do you consider flesh eating virus 'poisonous'?

Are you familiar with this species or trying to create pandemonium?

lol, I'm sorry, I was just kidding with ya. I don't know what that thing is. Or if flesh eating virus falls under 'poisonous'. :)

Feel free to joke AFTER we figure out what this is. It's about 1/2 inch and in the photo it is still alive (but injured, due to it's capture).

The bite site has swelled and we need to figure out if we need to ambulate or go about our business.

dowse bite site with cortizone - I use the Cort10 stick applicator. That'll be a $35 co-pay thankyewverymuch...

Put it a jar. Bring it and your self to the ER.

It does look like a bedbug. Google bedbug pics. Google bed bug bite pics - they get red and raised.
Bedbugs have 6 legs though and it looks like your bug has only 4.
Where was it? on a bed, a couch?

Definitely 4 legs on this guy. skinny head and a large body. In the photo the abdomen part has been mortally injured.

edit: Not sure on 4 legs

Longer body than bedbugs per google image search

It looks similar to a cone nosed beetle which is not horrible but not good. Is the bite area increasing in size? Is it hard to the touch? You might draw a circle with a pen around the swollen area to have a reference to how much it changes. How old is your child? Is it causing irritation other than itchiness? How's his breathing?

I'd watch it, give him benedryl, and possibly take him to the doctor tomorrow morning if it changes significantly by then.

Looks like this: Spined Assasin Bug. Simtech had a great guess up-thread. I think you just ripped off a couple legs when killing him.

I looked up cone nosed beetle and I doubt thats it. But, I would watch the bite area and seek medical attention if it grows or worsens in any way.

She gave him Claritin (antihistamine). The bite area is not increasing in size, showing some slight decrease and is still soft to the touch. No other symptoms.

PM sent

NOTE: NOT A DOCTOR, didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express

If it's that assasin bug, general concensus is a painful but non-poisonous bite. Local swelling and pain. Primary concern is anaphylactic allergic effects; watch breathing, etc. closely. Otherwise treat as an insect bite.

P.S. - Not a Dr and this is not medical advice. :)

[edit] - typos

Pretty sure it's an assassin bug. I'm sending it to an entomologist client of mine, though.

Thanks everyone. A few minutes after the initial bite, he seemed to not care ;the parents were more concerned than the child.

Swelling down 99.99%

It is indeed an assassin bug, by the way, confirmed by one of my clients who has a PhD in entomology. Says he:

Don the Entomologist said:
These are Reduviidae bugs which are collectively called assassin bugs. One of probably several hundred species.

I wonder if there is not any body of knowledge that cannot be found within the pilot community :)
