I think I made a horrible mistake - Windows 10 Update

I went through the process of downloading the update, and have a screen that presently says "99% compelete" but it is glacially slow. It took a couple hours to go from 98 to 99. It's been going most of the day.

Something must be wrong.
 
Nevermind. It's done. The last 27 minutes the computer was unusable.

I feel your pain. Thats gonna happen with Updates every now and then.
 
Last windows 10 update bricked my 2-in-1 laptop. Computer actually ran fine afterwards, but if I plugged in the USB to VGA adaptor I used for presentations, the normal screen went away and there was nothing I did that could bring it back. Rebuilt the entire system, plugged in the same adaptor, same result. Had a trip, ended up carrying my heavy old laptop.

When I got home, I rebuilt the system again and bought a micro HDMI to VGA adaptor, instead. It's OK with that.

After reading all these nightmare stories I will put off upgrading to windows 10 as long as I possibly can. Besides the forced harassment of a year of pop ups had already made that decision. To this day I comb "important" updates for that little piece of malware. Screw Microsoft.

I did that but threw in the towel when they started having "all in one" updates to 7. I must have missed something. I didn't think you could pick an choose updates anymore. If you wanted security updates you had to download one all encompassing update that included all the stuff you didn't want.

Hmmmm... I have Windows 7 and I still can choose them by checking or unchecking. I've never heard of "all in one" updates?

I must be remembering wrong. I remember getting a lot of individual updates. Like one for if you a foreign language key pack. If you run some program or the other. There would often be maybe 5-6 updates at once. Then they started just having one every week or so often that bundled all the tweaks together.
 
My laptop is running slow since the last massive update. If I could uninstall W10 and install W7 without losing everything I'd do it in a heartbeat. I hate 10. Hate.
 
You guys that aren't upgrading please chime in next year. I'm curious to see how it goes.

I have Win 7 Pro on both my desktop and laptop. Neither have ever been updated and work just fine. I refuse to go to Win 10.
 
Why in the holy he** would you "update" to the most useless OS since the invention of Windblows? Who in their right mind would install the WinX virus on their PC? That just boggles my mind.
Stick with Win7, that's a good and stable platform. (not as good as XP or 2K due to all the new bugs, design flaws and feature removal but at least it is supported by Microshaft)

Do yourself a favor and put Win7 back on.
 
The Model T is a great car and those jerks quit supporting it. Everybody knows they could've squeezed at least 250 HP out of that 2.9 Liter engine. Heck my Toyota is 135 HP and it's only a 2.0 Liter.

Plus, I just bought a new hand crank so I refuse to upgrade.
 
People sure do seem to get upset when someone likes a different operating system than they do! :rofl:
 
I'm not resistant to change, if something is made better I'm all for it. But it seems like for every step forward there are two steps back. Take for example the latest implementation of MS Paint. Drawing little shapes used to be easy and intuitive. Now it takes a lot of hunting and pecking, and saving a file takes like ten more clicks.

Btw, I do not discriminate, I hate Microsh*t and crApple equally and for the same reasons. Poor QC and lack of bigger picture of their product seems to be the common denominator. (where Google steps in too)

Keep your Model T if you like it, I prefer my 1991 vehicle with fuel injection, good economy and engine that start making noise when I turn the key to crank, not when my wife touches the door handle. LOL (yes, the new GM vehicles are programmed in China by some kids with no understanding of real life ... so don't be surprised if the battery in your new Chevy goes flat in the parking lot because somebody touched your car :D )
 
I've been using 10 for more than a year. I still prefer 7 or 8, mainly because of the (relative) lack of spyware. 10 is a great system "under the hood." It just does too much spying.

My advice to people who have to use 10 is to get the Professional upgrade (gives you a bit more control over updates and some other settings), disable all the spyware you can (starting with Cortana), and get OCD about backups, including full-system backups, especially before installing updates. I make an image every morning and a clone every afternoon, and install updates immediately after one or the other. Then if an update bricks the system, I can go backwards in minutes.

I also have the Macrium Reflect recovery accessible from the bootloader, so assuming the machine gets that far, I can restore without even breaking out a screwdriver. And in case the machine can't get that far, I have it burned to a bootable USB stick, as well. And if that doesn't work, I have the bootable clone. And if that doesn't work, I have all my important files saved to an ioSafe and also online at BackBlaze.

As I've said many times, I never heard anyone who just had a data disaster complaining about having too many good backups to choose from. You can never have too many backups.

I think Rich pretty much nailed it. Perhaps Win 10 is a good OS but because Microsoft uses it to track your every move, as do some others such as Google Chrome, I value my privacy (what little I can have thanks to cookies) enough to not want to be on their list of folks they can push advertisements on and collect data from.

I have a rather unusual last name, and mostly strive to protect myself. I have no mal-intent whatever. I simply want to be left alone while enjoying the benefits of the net. I have nothing I wish to hide. I am simply the average "Joe six pack" who feels MIcrosoft, Google, and others have no right to collect my personal data.

In my lifetime I recall the days when only the cops could access your information for good reason and that required a search warrant to do so. Not so today. Our government wants information about you all they have to do is ask your preferred search engine or your ISP what sites you have visited and based on that you could be named as a terrorist or anything the government wishes to describe you as.

I entered the world prior to WWII. As a youngster I recall the blackouts of the era. Personal privacy was still respected then. In their quest to control us that right to privacy has gone the way of the cigar store Indian.

I find it sad that our right to privacy has been violated.

Being grumpy tonight but I'm old so that is my privilege. Please get off my lawn. (sarc)
