So, I'm newly minted PPL and try to get up when I can. I learned something today, never under estimate the power of the vox controls (crew / all / isolate). I spent more time flipping that toggle than any other toggle in the plane. I also learned I need 100 cars - one at every FBO. I had the opportunity to take the family up today (wife and 2 kids). We ventured out and flew down to a small airfield to grab a bit to eat. 1) The FBO cafe was close (call ahead!) 2) There is no way to get from the airport to a cafe in town...4 miles away.

As it would seem, a lot of the smaller fields I fly into either don't have a courtesy car or the town is small enough that there is no taxi service. So, we loaded back up and headed for another airstrip. This time though, I asked on unicom if there was any available travel service - negative. Bummer! In spite of the awesome airtime, it was disappointing to not get anywhere other than the airfields.

It seems the transportation from the airport to X, is important. I need to do a better job planning or not visit these smaller fields unless it's for a fly-in etc.

Great day flying regardless...

Load up the mini bike!

It gets better with experience.

When I lived in Wisconsin, I knew every airport within an hour that had a restaurant within walking distance.

The max we(my wife and two teenagers) have walked is 3 miles. We usually look for towns preferably less than two miles from airport. Most times I try to plan ahead and call, but sometimes I run late and everyone has gone home. It is good exercise and always an adventure. Our last trip to Williamsburg, VA, we just caught three taxi rides in three days costing less than $70.

You need a subscription to the $100 hamburger or just search for fun places to fly on the net. Even with that call ahead as restaurants drop like flies these days

Check out airport courtesy cars a free app that lists courtesy cars at most US airports.

Folding bikes! If you choose carefully, two fit in the luggage compartment of a Cherokee/Warrior/Archer.

Always call ahead when going to a smaller airport! Sometimes they are out of gas or the FBO is closed etc. Pilots are a cheap bunch, we'll spend $200 to fly somewhere and then not want to spend $10 for a cab to a restaurant!

It would be nice when Uber moves to small towns, even if they changed their model to just provide dispatch service. Every small town has someone who provides taxi service to the elderly, dialysis patients, DUI recipients, etc. being able to track who provides that service is a bit tougher.

My advise is to plan ahead. That said, it would be nice if GA pilots could form airport car clubs. I've kept cars at distant airports before, but it would be a lot more cost effective if I was sharing the cost with 9-14 other pilots.

:yikes:, Charley's was closed???

I am somewhat familiar with your neck of the woods so here are a few suggestions...

K81 has a BBQ restaurant on the field. From the ramp side it looks like the FBO but it's a nice destination.

One closer to me and maybe farther for you is KALN, they have a great restaurant on field right next to the tower, closed on Mondays. Their pizza is really good.

K15 is probably almost too close to you for a good $100 hamburger but I know there are a few restaurants within walking distance. Osage Beach also has a couple of taxi companies. I've also heard the nearby Tan Tar A resort has a shuttle that will pick you up but I've never tried it. https://www.airnav.com/airport/K15
This airport is kind of hidden in the trees, at least when approaching from the W or E. I know the area well enough now I use a nearby water tower to locate it. There's no wx on field and the wind direction often differs from the nearby airports. Expect a mild crosswind... overflying to locate the field and check the windsock before entering the pattern might be wise. It's not THAT hard of an airport to land at, just those small issues.

I found that to be pretty useless. He refuses (literally, not just an oversight, he has made a decision and is proud of it) to put dates in the entries so you end up with a database of unknown currency that doesn't appear to have any real maintenance done to it. I bought into it and found it to be a waste of time and money there were so many inaccurate entries and switched to the (then new) ForeFlight restaurant listings.

Congrats on your PPL! I like to use this site when planning random restaurant flights. You can also see places within walking distance.

KVIH (Vichy) has a loaner car. Drive into Rolla and eat at, well, several places. I recommend Alex's pizza and then definitely stop by Slice of Pie.

I make the trip from KHSV a couple of times a year.
