I love poker!!

True, but run the regression analysis enough (i.e., play enough hands), and the actual results will approach the expected outcome.

Correct, most people don't play enough for that effect to actualize though. Most people lose, and lose big. Vegas doesn't exist because people are leaving with more than they came with, and even whales end up losing.

Absolutely. But that's why I don't play against the house.

eh, I dunno. if not for the casino in WV I would have no reason whatsoever to go there, I mean, it's WV..........(sorry WV guys, jk).

so I go there, stay in hotels, eat their cr@ppy food, play the local golf courses, and try to win some money in poker. I also tip the drink girls, more to the ones who show more cleavage, I mean come on. that cleavage IS the local economy.

now take that casino out of cross lanes, wv and I probably never would have seen that town ever.

speaking of that casino and poker, as soon as this dang work project is done I'm headin up there. y'all have been warned!

Right, you bring a few people in the community money, however at the same time, everybody in the community is losing their money there too. The effect is like everything else, it concentrates the wealth. It's just another avenue accelerating the process of draining society of everything and sending it up.

I've been in a local weekly poker game for 13 years. The game has been going for about 25.

Same 8 guys (with a couple rotating in/out to cover someone being out) each Thursday night. The only way in is by invite when someone quits or dies.

Friendly game with a very diverse group.

Perhaps. Its not just one gambler's experience for the casino however, its thousands. For every 20 people who lose $100, 19 walk out with $100 more than they came in; or one walks out with a $1900 jackpot. The casino still makes their 5%.

What kills the small time gambler is an underfunded bankroll. Playing $10-$15 per hand on blackjack or craps with $75-$150 is a recipe to lose. The casino has what amounts to an infinite bankroll, so if the player goes up, the casino just keeps taking their action. In the long run, the casino makes their percentage of every dollar bet, regardless of the outcome of any individual event. However, when the player is tapped out, they have to get off the roller coaster right there and then, and can't ride the pendulum back to where they are closer to the statistical expectation.

I'd venture a guess that in the aggregate the casinos make far more money on the $100 bankroll gamblers than they do on the whales, simply because there are far more of them.

I read some persuasive literature to the effect that gambling was good for Vegas and AC when you could only gamble in Vegas or AC, because it brought in money that would not have come otherwise. When every gas station convenience store becomes a "Casino" with 6 slot machines (my memory of driving off-interstate through coastal Louisiana some 10 years ago), all gambling does is crowd out other local entertainment venues for local dollars. Even the argument of "keeping gambling dollars local" that would have otherwise gone to AC or Vegas hasn't panned out. And the negative social aspects of the casino still have to be dealt with.

Exactly, as long as people were limited to a gambling vacation, it was fine. The problem with the inundation of gambling is that it eats not only the entertainment budgets, but car, housing, clothing, and food budgets as well. All it is is another form of consumerism, only you are buying a chance at money rather than a direct resource. A person with discipline and knowledge can come out ok in the long run, even ahead, or at least where the entertainment $/time comes out to about the same as going to a show. However as is do started throughout the rest of our consumer society, people lack that discipline in general, therefore the majority of the money that used to filter throughout the community goes directly to the gaming industry which if memory serves correctly, is majority run by the Bally Corp nation wide. Last I saw, they had all the Lotteries.

can we get back to poker?

poker is an awesome game and now I wanna play, thanks a lot, OP.

Everything was fine until Henning started his nanny state tirade. :D

Back to POKER!!!

For those of you who have weekly or monthly gatherings...what is your game of choice?

Our group goes all over the place, but primarily Texas Hold'em and Omaha. Sometimes an occasional hand of Seven-Card Stud if there's only 4 or 5 of us.

I prefer Hold'em.

Eman why don't you hop over to the Harrahs Cherokee casino? They have a pretty good live 2-5 game. It gets crazy when hey run a circuit event up there.

Also if you poker guys are ever on the NW side of ATL and want to play let me know. Lots of home games around. At my regular game last Friday (1-2 NLH) there was 12+k on the table.:D

A good night there can pay for quit a bit of flying......

jeez, that's some home game!

so Cherokee is actually 30 minutes closer to me, but mostly video poker, which, eh, sux. they do, like u said, have that 2-5 but last time I was there it was like 1.5 hour wait. overall it's just a pretty lame poker room. it'll do, but the wv one is all live and I guess worth the extra 30 minute drive. either way, 3.5-4 hours sux. I'm sorry, did u say 12k at a 1-2 home game? sheeeit.

Drive. Drive. Isn't this pilots of America not drivers of America. :D

Yeah if the right people are there it's a bit...um deep.

I hear you about cherokee. You should check it out during a big tourney weekend. They usually get quite a few live 1-2 tables, not just video.

....Most people lose, and lose big. ...The "ability to play well" is a fallacy beyond the basics of play; luck rules. If luck is not in your corner, I don't care how well you play, you will lose... It's evil to harm the stupid just because they are stupid.

Guy types that he has a fun night playing poker and you have to saddle up the highest horse you can find...Do you even read what you type?

If you had any real gambling knowledge you would understand without the house there is no game. At any tournament the amount of players that have no or little experience are the vast majority of losing players. What you would call "luck" just does not exist. In any one hand or even a few days of playing you might have extraordinarily good or bad results. Over time though players that apply themselves, practice and understand the odds win time after time. Out of the 13,000 players that enter to WSOP I'll let you pick 10 players at random and I'll pick 10 based on expected results using stats. There are 65 events at the WSOP pick 10 for every event and at the end I will beat you 100% of the time. I will bet you any amount on that.

There is something else though. While I chuckle at your typical smug, all-knowing, condescending posts this one bothers me. I get the feeling you think that someone should regulate gambling. Like the poor are some kind of sub-species that cant control themselves. The feeble minded should be protected from themselves. God forbid I build a pawn shop, race track or a porno shop near them. They would lose their mind and throw themselves and their paycheck on it. How is that any different from being a racist? That is a serious question.

It's obvious from your posts you think you are smarter and have more life experience than the rest of us little people, that's cool. You make reference to "stupid people" in one of your posts, seriously? How more people don't call you out is a testament to how many forgiving, polite souls are out there. Thinking you are better though, how about you keep that to yourself.

PS One last prayer. For the love of baby Jesus don't infect my favorite Piper forum. Concentrate on this one, I mean you can only do so much right?

So there's a good side question.

Casinos with runways within walking distance...?

None of the casinos I like to go to are readily adjacent to airports (ETA: particularly not since the urban planning geniuses who transformed AC into the coastal Detroit that it now is decided a decade ago to close Bader Field -- that wasn't exactly walking distance and you'd probably not want to walk through the intervening neighborhood, but it was a convenient cab ride nonetheless).

I've read that the Ho Chunk Casino (12 table poker room) will send a shuttle van to pick up pilots from Baraboo Dells Airport (KDLL), essentially right next door. Even if you didn't plan to play, it was a recommended solution to grab a meal without ground transportation hassles.

.....

12K?? :yikes:

That's some players with deep pockets..WAY out of my range!! Our group can get some good hands going, but I'd guess the most I've ever seen on the table for one hand was in the area of $400-$500! :D
