In honor of Valentine's Day. I thought I'd post about why I love aviation more then other more popular hobbies. Hope others post why they love it as well :)

MOST people in the hobby love it just as much or more so, taking the written test with all the stress I found a proctor who was the calm when I was anxious and excited with me after I passed. (She even let me hug her) :)

Aviation FBO's that reply to emails. I have been in contact with an airport about 45 minute drive south about what they have. It has never taken more then 24 hours for her to reply to my inquiries and so far they haven't monetarily gained from those but eventually she will. I adore people that put customers first and make sure others know good places to go.

Sure we're competitive with each other but it seems more jolly then in soccer or football. We all congratulate each other for their own milestones. Sure I got my PPL 2 years ago but when my friends or PoA people get theirs it's fun to share in their celebration because I remember the work involved.

That make sense or am I rambling? :)

I love aviation cause it keeps my wallet drained and more easily lets me keep the cobwebs out
;D

Because otherwise I would be rich and I don't manage money well. I don't need that kind of stress.

For me it isn't really a "hobby" but a form of transportation that fills a niche between a car and a commercial airliner. And of course a lot more fun than either.

Flying is transportation, paying for maintenance is a hobby...

Because it is hazardous, and I love me some hazard.

Gives me a chance to wear a big watch ,sunglasses, leather jacket. Also don't have to worry anymore about money as aviation takes it all.

It has lots of buttons, gauges, knobs, and levers to keep my ADD under control.:wink2:

Also it is the ONLY place my family & friends admire and respect my OCD.

I love learning how to build, modify, and maintain aircraft. Flying them is icing on the cake! :D

And my honest answer:

I love aviation because: Ever since I was a kid, I could not keep from stopping in my tracks anytime a plane flew over to imagine who was in that thing and what they were seeing.

As a young man, I would stare out over the wing of southwest airlines 737 for the entire duration of a 3 hour flight to visit my grandparents every year and study every twitch and flicker of the spoilers, ailerons, and when the thrust reversers kicked on after touching down, I LOOOOVED that power up, and the sound of the engine and the whole idea of using the engine to slow the plane. No peanuts for me, just put me next to the window and mom and dad wouldn't hear a peep.

Dad had a Cherokee and flew for 4 or 5 years when I was between 8 - 12 years old and that was awesome. We didn't fly often but I was always waiting for him to come home from work on Friday hoping to hear the magic words: "How about you and me go flying tomorrow?"

Later I got in to RC planes because I think watching planes fly is the most amazing / graceful thing in the world. My mom would get up with me every Sat / Sun mornng and sit in her car in a field reading books while I flew Avistars, Four Star 40s, Big sticks, Gentle Lady, and whatever else I had put together from pieces of my last crash.

Got my drivers license and every day after school before work, would park across form the runway at Addison airport and watch Cessnas, Cherokees, and the occasional Lear land / takeoff.

Had college, kids, and other interruptions but still had a garage full of RC planes.
Finally last year I just said why have I not tried this?

On Dec 21 of 2012, I took my first lesson. 16 hours later I called my dad and said "Hey dad, I am going to solo in about an hour"

I soloed, and grabbed my torn shirt tail and made a Bee line for my dad's house.
At 36 I was giddy like a kid I ran in the door "Dad Dad I did it"

He was already on the computer looking for an airplane to buy. Now he hadn't flown in 20+ years but me soloing I think woke up that kid in him.

2 weeks later he was current and doing IFR training. May11th of last year (my dad's birthday) he bought us the TB9. I put another 70 hours on that plane and then took my check ride on Oct 26 2013

First Passenger was Mom to thank her for spending countless hours in a field so I could fly my toys.

Now I fly with my dad every chance I get

So why do I love aviation? I guess I am one of those "It's in my blood" kind of people. Simply put: It's magic.

It is the one thing I have as an adult that still fires up that kid inside every time I am around, in, or just watching planes.

To avoid taking up an inordinate amount of space by quoting the above, I'll just say THAT is an awesome post, SixPapaCharlie!

The first and last two lines pretty much sum it up for me, too.

I love it for the fact turning wrenches on airplanes kept me fed for thirty years and I got to meet a bunch of truly good folks. Oh; and I got to fly sometimes.:D

That about says it for me, too, SixPapaCharlie.

I enjoy it for the solitude. I used to get in the Citabria after work, take off and climb up to about 4500' then just bore holes for an hour. No radio, no cops, no one but me and sometimes my GF. We'd usually end up finishing with a hammerhead. I'd pull up vertical, stomp on the rudder, and over we'd go, aiming at the ground. I'd pull back the power, lean over and scream into the intercom; "aaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!". Then do a recovery and go home. She'd generally find something back there to whack me on the head with. One time, she couldn't find anything to hit me with and I said "there's always your bra". So she took that off and whacked me with it a few times.

Sometimes we'd take a roll of TP, and I'd toss it out and let it unfurl(use two ply) then turn back and cut it a few times. I'd let her try to cut it(not a pilot), and she'd be yanking and banking, and tossing us around like rocks in a box.

Where else can you do that without someone bugging you, or hassling you? Now, I mostly just tootle around for work, or to get somewhere.

I'm an engineer who has always been impressed with machinery.
Machines that fly are the most impressive.

I got the bugin about 1960 when I was 26 years old, but like others family, Kids, and no money made it 1980 before I started my pilots training. I love flying as it gives me a reason to get up in the morning, it gives me a reason to keep in some assemblance of shape, and lets me see some great back country in the back country of ID. and OR. It also lets me share the love of flying with others. I have a feeling of worth as I help the sheriff's office with search and rescue too.

Is this a great country, or what!

Reminds me of that.

I love aviation because for me it is a chance for me to prove that everyone with the same challenges I had growing up can be a pilot.

Aviation is the reason I can pay for everything else I have...

Aviation is the reason I can't pay for everything else I have.

(Actually that's not quite true, I don't buy anything I can't pay for. But there are a few things I would have, if it weren't for aviation.)

And this is the wine talking....
The other reason I love aviation.

Sunset flight on Valentines day.

Unfortunately the wine did her in. But still...
Just have to tweak the formula a bit ;)

I hope everyone reads this thread when the naysayers say GA is out the door. It's alive and well as far as I can tell - at least for today. No point in worrying about what may happen tomorrow, enjoy today for what it gives you. Yep I'm a girl :) Enjoy your flying this year. Accomplish the goals you can love each other.

Plus you can't get to see sights like this with out a bug smasher.
