I can't stop laughing

Yeah the Mustang has always been my favorite warbird and since I don't have 3 grand or more for a 30 min flight in one, this is probably the closest I'll ever get unless I hit the mega.

I don't have this yet (haven't played a sim in a long time) but I'll probably pick it up at some point. Although the dogfighting looks like fun, I'm more interested in the flight model.

I've never been too crazy about the ones in FSX.

The flight model is great. I'm lucky enough to be on the internal test team for Eagle Dynamics, so I've had the pleasure of "flying" the P-51 for a few months already. You definitely have to have good rudder control. The first maneuver I perfected was the ground loop. :D

Thanks for the pirep. I'll have to check it out when I get some free time, whenever that is:dunno:

I haven't fired up Blackshark or A-10C in ages. Love them both, especially A-10C:yesnod:

I sure wish this level of Flightsim and computer power was around when I was a kid playing the Janes, Falcon 3.0, A10 tank killer, etc games. I had soooo much more time!

Anyone remember Longbow and F16 combat pilot?

Played longbow, Janes, tank killer...

when I was a kid

We didn't even have computers. We went outside and played with real toy gliders (no radio controls) that we built. Those and kites was about all the aerial combat you had. It took a LOT of skill, effort and luck to take out a 12" wingspread enemy glider. The winner of a combat engagement was the one that stayed flying after the midair. If they both went down, you had to do it again.

Falcon 3.0

Eh. Spoiled kids. Anyone remember Jet?
Or better yet, Apple FS1?

hahaha that's something:rofl:

yeah I didn't get a computer til I was around 16. I saved my money and bought a C-64 from Consumers (remember them?).

Hell yeah I remember JET! Remember SOLO FLIGHT? :wink2: I think there were about 3 airfields in that one, lol. Vail,Colorado and two other ones that I can't remember right now

So it's interesting... Lots of folks today say that kids aren't interesting in flying because they have flight sims... Yet here's all of us with tons of time on the PC joysticks, flying.

Hmm. $. Must. $. Be. $. Something. $. Else. ;)

OK, getting serious here for a second. I've never in my life played on a sim. What kind of computer equipment do you need, how much should I spend for the basics to get started?

That kinda depends on how crazy you want to go with it, John...

:)

Most modern PCs will run flight sims fine. The big performance increases are in the video card. Cheap video card, it's going to be choppy and/or the resolution and quality of the "imagery" outside is going to go down.

Some "certified" Instrument trainers that only really need to display the instruments and a tiny window of "outside world" are still running on completely outdated Pentium 4 machines... amazingly enough.

But to get outdoor "VFR" realism, a decent CPU and Video card are a must.

There's also the controls. Any flight sim can be flown by keyboard, but that's not really what most pilots or gamers want. Most beginner setups start with at least a joystick and a throttle control. But you can buy yokes, rudder pedals, control panels for "reaching for the radio knobs", and keep spending money until the cows come home, if you like.

One thing to watch out for on REALLY old used stuff if shopping the used market, is that it's pretty rare to see a real "joystick" port (used to commonly be put on the sound card) on modern systems. USB replaced all that. But you still see joystick-port controls for sale on eBay, for example.

:yeahthat: What he said..

and if you do take the plung, you'll be in for a treat with today's sims compared to what we used to have!

The DCS (digital combat simulator) series are about as real as you're gonna get!

Their A-10C is incredible. The P-51 is still in beta but you can pre buy it now. I'm sure it's another work of art, just look at that video!

Thanks. I've been thinking about doing this. Now that I have the time (I retired Jan 1st.) I might just go ahead with it.

Oh cool. Congrats on the retirement!

I usually build my own PC because I've enjoyed doing that over the years(can't remember the last time I bought one).

The last one I built about two years ago but I have very little time to use it.

I'm one of those guys that goes all out.... Yoke, pedals, top end joystick, multi monitors (4), etc.

One of the most important points in Denverpilot's post which I'll bear witness is.......But to get outdoor "VFR" realism, a decent CPU and Video card are a must.

Good luck, have fun:)

Also, especially for the DCS combat sims - you're gonna want TrackIR

now if all the sim companies would get together, we could have a perfect product.
