I can't fly over D.C., but the Russians can...

Yeah, we're more dangerous in our spam cans than foreign jets. Oh well, treaty stipulations are what they are.

You can fly over DC. You just need to clear it more then three days in advance, and have a US Air Marshall on board if below a specific altitude (which they will not tell you); or just fly higher then 10K MSL and go VFR.

It's way more involved than that and civilian traffic is restricted to landing and departing DCA, VKX, CGS, and W32. I've had FRZ credentials since they were first issued (I was at VKX on 9/11). Even so, I can't go from IAD to W29 on anything approximating a direct route.

But do they have ADSB on their spy planes?

When I was at WPAFB, the Ruskies were there often on these treaty missions. Interesting to see on the ramp on the way to the Aero Club. I always "shot 'em up" from my Cherokee on my takeoff and landing:cool:

Cheers

While no doubt this flight is a bit to troll POTUS...they are apparently very common and pre-approved with a US observer on board.

15th overflight by Russia this year.

But I guess it is a better news story headline to scream "THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!"

We know the Russians, we don't know you....:lol:

When I was in central America in the early 80s, there was a Russian "observer" there.

One day I asked him why he was there.

He said I am here to watch what you do.

I told him my government tells your government what we are doing.

He said, Yes, but my government does not trust your government...

He did have the best liquor supply in El Salvador.

I remember the good ol' days when I could go right between Andrews and National on my way to College Park. :sigh:

For years when I was based at VKX, I would just tell the distant controllers I was going to ADW (since nobody knew where VKX was). When handed off to Andrews they would just ask "Potomac or Hyde." Crazy Dave Wartofsky even had a "ILS into ADW and Special VFR to VKX" approach plate made up at one point.

Had one of those in Anchorage. ILS (or PAR???) into Elmedorf, then at a certain altitude you would break right and land at Merrill. Never tried it myself. Think it may have been a local procedure.

I got curious and looked up VKX. Holy Late 90s Batman!!!

WTF is up with that website? It's like a insane person threw up on an ancient geocites page.

Dave wasn't on quite an even keel even before he got dumped on by the post-911 stuff. The webpage was full of goofy things even then.
The fact that his airport is operating under a massive security theater disability hasn't helped.
