What you describe is the old piston propliner way of transitioning to cruise (DC-6/B377/Connie...etc). I've never heard of jet guys doing it.

Maybe that was it. We had a few DC3 drivers and other big piston planes. Think some of them flew for Academy down in Griffin GA. Think they're were a few youngsters too, but they probably picked it up from the old farts when they were FOs.
